1968 40HP Johnson - Hydro-Electric Shift

When I am cruising in the water at 3/4 WOT all the way to WOT, it will tend to pop into Neutral after a short while. I will obviously idle it down and then it will go into gear again, but it will only stay in gear if I stay under 3/4 max speed (or it will pop out again).

Anyway before I open up the gearcase to try and find the problem, I was wondering if somebody could tell me what I should be looking for.

Re: Jumping out of gear.

the gears and shift dog splines are worn . the shift dog may be worn and not the gears . i have seen them recut and work fine on a 10 hp . the gears are verry expensive . i have a 1971 50 hp.eletric shift i am going to put a standard shift ft. on it . change one some years ago . had to change some things on the power head but worked fine .

Re: Jumping out of gear.

1968 40hp motors were offered in manual shift or Electramatic (electric) shift. Never as hydro-electric. Manual shift has a clutch dog, electric shift has a spring clutch, no clutch dog. Never tear into an electric shift without a thorough checkout of the electric wiring and shift switch first.
