jumping out of gear

Hi Everyone <br /><br />I Got a johnson 25 HP 1973 , and when i shift it<br />gear it stay there until the speed increase and the boat is under load, then it came back in neutral, i puted a bungee corde on the shifter and the problem is solve.<br /><br />Someone tell me it is the Clutch dog , since this parts is expensive and would like to have more advices.<br /><br />Thanks for your help

Elvis....if it feels like yer hittin a log, then it's probably jumping outta gear. The lobes on the clutch dog and most likely forward gear are worn to the point that they won't stay engaged at higher rpm's/torque. Only cure is to replace them.

hello<br /> if it will stay with a bungee cord and not continue to jump I would check that the detent assy on the stbd side of the powerhead is adjusted properly,not rusted away and that the roller is in good condition. if it still jumps the gear and dog assy has gotten expensive.<br /> carefully check the shift cradle while you have the unit apart.<br /> good luck and keep posting

change your lower unit lube. if you see metal shavings and it looks like glitter, than thats bad, i had that on a 50 hp evinrude. clutch dog worn.<br /><br />looks like youll hafta take her apart and have a look. good luck

don't know about your exactly, but some have the same gears for forward and reverse, if yours are the same you may be able to turn them around (use the forarwd gear for reverse and reverse for forward) also rotate the clutch dog 180* must use reverse verry little.
