Jumping trim gauges

I have a 2000 Larson with 5.0 GL PEFS engines with twin Duo prop drives. It has 2 analog gauges that indicate the out drive position. Should the gauges move smoothly as the drives are raised and lowered? They do show full down and full up (no limit controls on this model as far as I can determine) but tend to jump as the out drives are moved. Is this jumping normal? Is the sender the type that can be cleaned or do the senders have to be replaced? Can it be something else like corroded wires or connections?

Could be wires, could be senders. The senders never did work that great and failure was common. They have been updated a couple of times and seem to last longer now.
The new pn for the kit is 3594989

I have the same issue on my Alpha 1 drive. The sender unit is a balanced bridge resistor unit witha rotating arm. What happens is the the arm or windings (or both) get corroded and the only resistance is fully open or dead short. Tried to re-wire mine to save the $140 to no avail. Good luck.
