i need some help here. i have a 89 omc 4.3 with the king cobra drive. i took it out to the lake today ( 1st time this year), when i put it foward i heard the gears grinding alittle and then when jump out of gear. i had the linkige of during the winter do move the dog house. i took it back home and ran it in the driveway. it does seem to go in gear without any noise when i move the linkage by hand. is my cable not adjusted right? if so i can i adjust it? and it seems it go in reverse without any problem. thanks for your time

Howdy,

Your lower shift cable is most likely out of adjustment and/or needs replacement.

You NEED the correct OEM OMC service manual for your model and you should probably have a look at THIS

Rick

Unfortunately, once this happens a couple times, you probably have done enough damage to the clutch dogs that they won't stay engaged even after you replace the shift cable and make the proper adjustments.

Keep your fingers crossed that you got lucky and the clutch dogs are still ok.

Don't ask me how I know this. :(

thanks for the input. i went out to look at it some more and i noticed that when i took the top cable off( the one from the remote) i noticed that it ran under some hoses and then back up to the motor. I took it off and re ran it to a straighter route and now seems to work good.

You won't know if it's adjusted correctly or damaged until you try it in the water.

A dog-clutch cobra will always shift in/out of gear easily when out of the water...

You really really really need to make sure the adjustment is correct. The life of your gears in your drive depend upon it.

It would definitely be worth looking at the adjustment before you put it in the water again. Also, a cable that is failing(usually the outer housing of the cable down near the drive) will not allow you to hold an adjustment because if the housing moves, the adjustment goes out. Take a look at where the cable enters the drive with the drive tilted up. That is where mine always failed.
