evening all,ive recently purchased a working mariner 40 el serial 6e9l 418610,it does have a few problems like water in gear box,thats ok i got it to pull apart to learn about motors to go along with a course im doing,the thing is that i want to start the motor up but dont have a wiring harness or throttle box/key start,it cant be pull started so what to do ?either convert to pull start, or can i start it just by runing form battery and if so how?thanks for your help:eek:

If you don't have the wiring harness, how would you shut the engine off if you did get it started. You also need to have water connected. But to answer your question, you start the engine by jumping the starter solenoid. Connect the battery. Using a short piece of wire, touch one end to the large terminal on the starter solenoid that has the positive battery cable connected to it. Touch the other end to the small terminal on the solenoid that comes from the ignition switch.. If that doesn't work, just use a jumper cable. Connect one end to the positive post on the battery. Touch the other end directly to the large post on the solenoid that goes to the starter. Keep in mind you need a way to choke the engine and control the throttle.
