When I bought my boat I thought the prop looked good to me (1975 Johnson 85hp). It had a few nicks on the leading edge, but didn't look bent or anything major. Then I went and purchased a new prop so I could use my old one as a spare and have the old one fixed up and balanced. With the original prop I was getting about 32mph (at 5200 rpms) with what I thought was a pretty smooth ride. I put the new prop on and now I get 38 mph and have a much smoother ride (less vibration). I took my old prop to the prop shop and while I was sitting it on the counter the technician said "wow, that blade is bent pretty good". I hadn't even noticed it until he pointed it out. For $60 I will get a perfect spare prop in case I damage the new one.
So anyway, what I am getting at is, take a good hard look at your prop and make sure it is in great condition. It will smooth out the vibrations, get a better hole-shot and better top speed. Sometimes it pays to get a professional opinion.
