Hello, I have a 1969 mercury 1000 and am wandering if its harmful to the engine if i run the water hose to it while the engine isnt running. I cant get water to come out of the pee hole and im trying to check the hose leading to the hole for dirt.
It shouldnt bother the engine at all, but the water may not come out because there is a pump that draws the water in when the engine is running and the hose may not get past it. The best way to clean the lines is to run the engine with the hose hooked up, this will exspel any dirt in the engine and leave clean water in the block.
Actually, this can be extremely harmful!! If you're not getting a tell-tale there's a good possibility you need to replace your water pump. Hooking up the rabbit ears wth a worn out water pump does absolutely nothing except waste water. Your motor could easily burn up after only a few minutes if not cooled adequately. How can the engine burn up if it's not running?
As for the condition of his water pump it may or may not be bad. If water is not coming out of the motor, when the motor is running then shutting down immediately is called for. This can damage the motor. When the motor is off how can the motor overheat?
