Just a question

Hello, never been apart of a forum but I need some help. I have a Evinrude 4hp yacht twin outboard and I’d like to get it going. I haven’t started it nor have any information if it was started recently. It’s been sitting in my house for 8 years. Any common issues or anything I should watch for. Thanx!

nice easy motors to work on...

1- change impeller
2-check gear oil and replace use new washers to seal properly
3- won't hurt to clean the carb passages with carb cleaner ...DO NOT put carb cleaner on the float !! if float crumbles ...replace it
4- remove the pump cover and inspect the small screen ...clean if need be

ignition coils may be all cracked if never replaced you need to pull the flywheel (you will need a puller )
50 year old condensers are likely in need of replacement

while under the FW .. clean points with ex; 300 grit paper check for a gap of .020 at the high point of the cam for now
may as well put in new j6c plugs :)

see links for basic maintenance o small outboards

Remove both spark plugs and rope pull the starter slowly to check if the motor is not seized due to long storage. If turns follow what's been suggested...

I did that right after I watched so many videos that I’m practically an outboard myself 😂. I have a compression tester so I tested that too. It’s all mint.

yep and if seized inject some lubricant like wd40 in the cylinders and let it soak a a day or two then retry

in the mean time drop the lower unit to check the water impeller and with the gear case off try to rotate the flywheel by hand if OK GREAT !!
if stuck with the Gear case reinstalled.... then bad news .. gears stuck but this is VERY unlikely

Thank you and when I take the lower unit off should I be ready to buy or make replacement gaskets? Im new to owning boats but used them my whole childhood and such. Never worked on them though

no gasket on the gear case housing just remove 4 bolts and drop it to unbolt the water pump housing for the replacement impeller
slide the new impeller down the shaft don't loose the small key & reinstall it

check closely the impeller housing has 2 VERY small holes... see pic. clean them out

slide the impeller housing over the impeller while rotating the shaft clockwise ...looking down the fins will bend in and then just bolt it up.
(apply a small dab of grease/oil on the impeller fin tips or around the housing inner wall)

query UTUBEs lots of videos to help out

line up the water tube and do not crush the rubber fitting on the pump housing .

stay calm don't worry be warned the oldies bug may bite and you will be fixing these old motors as a hobby the little 3-4-5 hps are great to work on , purr like kittens and great for trolling all day on a gallon of gas..

That motor must have something which holds the gear case's shift rod onto the lower leg, if so, must disconnect it prior dropping the lower leg or will wonder what the...is happening...

Lever (red grip) where you would expect to find the shift lever is the throttle lever.
