I just purchased a 1989 Cajun Boat with a 125 hp Force Motor that my seller says runs great. From those with experience with this motor did I make a mistake? Is there something in particular that I need to know about it so I save myself headaches down the road? I'm hoping for a good experience and appreciate any advice you have. Thanks.

if it runs great now then keep it well maintained and it should run until you get tired of looking at it. TnT will go out soon (if not already) becuase the rubber is almost 20 years old. You can get another 5 years out of system for under $200 by rebuilding motor/valve body. You have metal reeds so the powerhead isn't going to self destruct unless you make a mistake in maintenance. Impeller housing is aluminum and might be prone to saltwater pitting. It is best to replace housing every few years but you can also cold-weld and hone to get another season or two. Put impellers and fuel pump diaphrams on maintenance rotation, clean out varnish in carbs every spring, keep electrical connections clean, adjust idle while in gear, and keep away from mercury trained mechanics. If saltwater then staying on top of zinc anode is an absolute must. Done right, it should run you about $50 per year in self-maintenance and never leave you looking for a tow. It's going to be noisy, drink lots of gas, and have rather docile mid-range power - that's the nature of the beast. You can cut down noise by lining inside of engine cover with neoprene but otherwise it is what it is - cheap, simple, and reliable power with no frills. It's like the old Ford 2liter. Everybody loves to bash them but they just keep running anyway.

This is exactly what I found out also, about my recently aquired 89' 125hp Force motor, in fact I find it simpler to work on, and more user friendly, then most other brands.

Let's get something straight here: ANYTIME you buy any boat you have made a mistake. B O A T--Bust Out Another Thousand -- A fiberglass lined hole in the water into which you throw money.

My personal opinion on earlier Force engines is that they are a great bargain--Inexpensive to buy, easy to maintain, and deliver satisfactory performance. Even major overhauls don't hurt your pocket book too much. Did you make a mistake? some people will say yes, but if you are happy with the boat and engine----- Remember: there are other forums here with just as many problems for Merc, Rude, Yammy, and others. All brands have problems with some of the engines. Some engines of all brands run forever with no problems. Let's hope yours is one of those.

I'm new to Force engines this summer. Got a 85hp on a Bayliner I bought. Already took off the carbs and fixed a broken float. What a dream this motor is to work on compared to my Johnson 40hp.
