I just bought some Castrol Gear Lubricant ... 75w 90 SAE gear lube for outboard motors for my Mercury 650cc 65hp 1970 Thunderbolt. My mechanic said it was perfectly fine and they use it all the time and it will be great for my motor and i don't need to waste my money on the quicksilver stuff. Is it really ok to use? It cost me bout $20 USD for the 4 bottles.

He says its a good oil because if water where to ever get in it mixes really well and your gearbox won't screw up to fast.

By the way guys i just checked my lube thats been sitting in my gearbox for about 1 week unused and no water came out but this slightly thickish creamy oil came out totally different than the gear lube i just bought but no water came out first then oil so it seems my lube has no water in it and the seals are ok but is it normal for the oil to get so aerated it becomes harder to see through and gets slighly whiter?

Or should it return to its honeycomb colour?

Because my wrench said the oil is aerated and its normal and the only way to check if water is in there is if u leave it for 3 days no more and then undo the bottom screw then if even a drop of water comes out at the start then oil your screwed but mine seems to have no water coming out first.

Thanks again guys yous are all champs and i could not have done half the stuff i could have dreamed possible with out yas

Thanks in advance iboat users
