Just bought a 65 9.5 hp sportwin and was wondering what I should do to try and get it running. It doesn't have a gas tank, only the motor. Is there anything special I need or are all tanks universal. Why are there two connections that look like they are for the gas? Can I get the impeller at most boat stores? And can someone explain the carb cleaning process. I done it on lawnmower type engines and our 35 footer, but I can't even distinguish the carb. Thanks

All you need is a simple single line OMC tank. Very common.

Start by testing the compression. The mounts can be troublesome on them as well.

Will do. Can you guys tell me about it? Like it's features and important info. Know nothing bout it.

A compression test determines the general health of the powerhead. If all is well there, money is not being wasted on the motor. A rebuild is not something you may want to get into at this time.

The 9.5 carb is a touch different from the other OMCS of its vintage, but the principles are all the same.

I sent you a PM

So I did the compression test. It was 65. Thats not good is it. I probably did it wrong, I had both plugs out and screwed the gauge in and pulled like 6 times quickly. Never went over 80 then popped back down to 65. After that I put new plugs in, hooked up a gas tank mixed 50:1 and pulled- nothing. don't think I'm getting any spark. By the way for those of you that don't know I'm 14

And how do I pull the flywheel without a puller

Got the flywheel off. What am I looking at for these spark plugs?

The 9.5hp has low compression, as long as the readings were the same I wouldnt worry about it just yet.

Get some wet dry sandpaper or emory cloth, fold it in half, then run it through the points a dozen times. Blow off with compresses air, then dip a business card, or clean paper in acetone and run that through to clean them.

Are the coils all cracked or do they look intact? Have a picture?

heres a link that is a good read as it discusses that series of motor in depth......and its always good to see a young man take an interest in vintage outboards!!! better than the xbox!?

Oh I don't do xbox. Or video games in general they bore me. I got new plugs this morning with the gauge and tank. Still nothing. Took off the fuel pump, did the ol clueless lookover then put it back on. So right now I have the wheel off and nothing else. Thanks for the link by the way.

If you got 80 psi at some point, it probably has life. Go to the link NWCOVE suggested, read and study all. Next thing would be to develop spark. Fuel pump is a bit tricky, covered in Leeroy's ramblings. I have a 9.5 that has never let me down.

What should I do to start for spark? New plugs already.

Probably the best thing you can do for yourself is 1, get a factory manual for the motor. It will help you troubleshoot the motor. For the spark problem, find out the theory of operation for an alternating firing two cylinder magneto ignition. Once you understand the system you'll be able fix any problem you may find.

Do magnetos work like spinning the shaft of an electric motor? Here are pictures.

The coils LOOK like they will be ok. Do you have a meter and am able to use it?

You should bury the needle going from the coil ground lead (under bolt) to the lead that goes to the points. That is the primary.

On the secondary, which is from the same ground lead to the spark plug boot, you should get between 3000 and 8000 ohms resistance.

This test wont help with whether the coil will work under load, but will tell you if there are any obvious breaks in the circuits.

Then clean the points as I described above, and set them to 020
Let us know what you find.

Yes and no. They both deal with magnetism and induction currents. Basically there are magnets in the flywheel, when they pass the iron cores they induce a current into the coil windings, there is a primary and secondary windings in the coil. They inshort, step up the voltage. When the points are closed they allow the current to flow (from high to low). When the points open, there is a rush of high voltage which then arcs across the spark plug gap. The condenser keeps it from arcing across the opening points and helps boost the voltage at the plug when the condenser expels its built up voltage. That is basically what happens. The points, both sets need to be clean, correctly gapped when open, and close squarely. I would clean and gap the points and check again for spark.

This is asking a bit much, but could someone make a diagram off that picture or just explain which parts are which?

Re: Just bought 64 9.5 sportwin

So should I just get someone to fix it? This magneto is pretty darn confusing. I can get magneto diagrams on google but they have absolutely 100% no resemblance to that one. I'm completely capable of doing everything else once I get spark. Haven't really done any electric work more than a solenoid before. Gettin better though. I'd love to learn about magnetos- especially since all men who have thrown me some insight that I know seem to know nothing about them either. Seems rare to get a person who knows about them. All I know right now- if my uncle was right was that the two silver and red cylinders are condensers and there's one for each cylinder. Also that those little boomerang shaped things are the points. What does the spacing have to do with anything?

And are the big brown/purple things the coils?
