Hi im new to boating and this website. I just bought an 85 bayliner with a 85hp force motor. The boat ran fine the first day i bought it but now it only runs the first time u crank it. after u let it die it just keeps turning over like its flodded or something. Cleaned the carbs, but did no good. I run in the yard with water ears and it does great.. until i shut it off! after then its over. The last time i tried it would run in neutral, but dies everytime i try to put it in gear. Could this be bad gas? I think it sat up a while befor i bought it. Im very green when it comes to this kinda thing so any help at all will be greatly appreciated!
There is also water leaking around the bottom of the casing above the propeller. Dosnt seem like it should be a big deal, but im not really sure.

Seems like a classic case of a fouled fuel system.Generally a motor that has sat alot fuel system gets gunked up.Runs good at first and gradually gets worse. It starts at first but refuses after it is warm.Could be the carbs flooding.I would start at the carbs again prove all passages and jets are clean Be sure floats are set right and float valves work. Then check everything all the way to the tank.

okay, i took all three carbs off and cleaned them out. Now the engine has no problem firing up and idles normal. It sounds like it has powe in the yard with muffs on, but when I put it in the lake i have no power. It just cruzes along at about 5mph and mufles out when i try to accelerate. Could this be the water pump about to go. Ive Been running it alot in the yard with the muffs. Thanks to everyone who replied before!!

i hate to say it buddy but that force will suck the life outta ya! i had a 70hp before and it had all the same problems and some. the coils would lose spark intermittinly, it constantly flooded( even after the rebuilt), it ran too hot one day and fine the next. your best bet is to sell it for scrap and start over.

Well ur probably right, but i just bought it about a week ago and im not ready to give up yet! The boat ran fine in the river the first day i bought it. I put it in the lake and it ran about 40 mph no problems. Im hoping maybe I just dont have it synchronized right or something, it has normal power with the muffs on. Ive gathered alot of info from this site, and I think it may possibly be a cylinder not firing. As I mentioned befor I know practically nothing about ouboards so if anyone has any advice on troubleshooting I would be extremely grateful. Ive wanted a boat for as long as I can remember and now im so close!! Thanks in advance everyone! Just bought the manual also. Expecting it in the mail anyday.

Start with the basics, Check for spark, and check the compression. Go from there.
Get back to us.

Hey, I too own a 85 hp Force, if it will run on ears at home, but won't run under load, you are probably not getting fire at all three cylinders, check for spark on all 3.

And don't let the nay-sayers like airframer get you down. There is nothing wrong with Force engines. As I have said before, they are no better or worse than other brands. True, they can have some puzzling problems and true, they sometimes are fussy, but for the most part, they are reliable.

When you get the manual, read and understand the various sections. Logically diagnose the engine. You should find that these engines are so simple that in most cases, if you take a logical step by step approach, any problem will become relatively easy to find and correct.

Those people who think that all a Force is good for is junk, just had a bad experience and are just predjudiced.

You should have gotten a relatively good deal on your rig for just the above reason. Because of price and simplicity, it is an excellent starter boat and engine combo. Even major repairs are relatively easy and less expensive than other brands. Don't look at engine problems as aggravation but rather as learning opportunities. And when you take out your boat, think of the satisfaction you will have, knowing that you fixed it.

Good luck and have fun.

Re: Just bought 85 hp force. Need help!!!

First of all thanks to everyone who gave advice. It has been extremely helpful. I got the manual and adjusted the carbs and everything ran great. best 1000 bucks i ever spent. Its still running fine, but yesterday I took it out and only had about half power. It will usually top out at about 40, but was barely doing 20. Gradually the problem got worse so i took the plugs off (which were filthy) and cleaned them off. Nothing happened immediately, but about 15 minutes later it just kicked back in and ran fine the rest of the day. full power just like the day before. I ran it low on gas when it started acting up so im hoping it was just some bad gas, but ive heard that force motors have a bad rap for intermittedly no firing on all cylinders. Hate to get to far up the river and something go out. thought maybe someone would have some troubleshooting feedback. thanks in advance to everyone who replies!!

Some cheap inexpensive things i woudl replace since its older and relatively unknown to you are the impeller and fuel pump. Both parts will cost you about 30 bucks and are easy to replace. Just some added insurance and the new fuel pump might help with the other problems your having.
