He is right some older models did not have tele tele but newer ones do. Take note OBJ is a vice admiral with nearly 6000 posts and would not do anything to stear you wrong.

Just bought a new boat MOTOR DOESN'T **** - NO TELL TALE?

Hello.

I am brand new to the boating world. I just bought my FIRST BOAT! It is a 70/80's 17' Sundance Ski/Speed boat (low profile).

It came with a really good looking 1975 85HP Evinrude. The motor runs fine and has 140-145psi on all cylinders. We hooked it up to a hose and fired it up BUT NO WATER SQUIRTS OUT OF ANY ORIFICES? Water comes out the prop/exhaust, but it doesn't seem to have a "tell tale" .

The mechanic just checked it all out less than a month ago and it made it through all checks with NO PROBLEMS.

I don't want to use the boat until I find the "tell tale". Is it possible there just isn't enough pressure from my hose to make it out the tell tale?

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE THE TELL TALE IS ON THIS MOTOR? OR IF THERE IS SUPPOSED TO BE A TELL TALE ON THIS YEAR MOTOR?

Your engine doesn't have a tell tale butteco. Just watch the exhaust releif ports on the back side of the midsection. A misty spray will come out of there....little more when the t-stats open.

WHEW! That is a relief! Okay that is what the Previous Owner said but I just didn't want to take his word for it - because I saw two ports on the lower unit that looked like water should be squirting out!!! It just seems funny that they wouldn't put a tell-tale on an outboard? I thought every outboard has a tell tale!

So is this true for ALL Evinrudes, or just the older ones?

Can anyone confirm OBJ's information! (not that I doubt him - just like to be double assured!!!)

THANKS! Thats what I figured!!! I tried to make it clear I wasn't doubting him, I did see his posts total!

I just like to be multiply-assured!

Thanks Guys !

Looks like I got a pretty good deal! I got lucky too - been looking in the damn paper for almost 2months without finding ANYTHING! Then just out of curiosity I went to look at this guys "old boat" and the damn thing looks brand new and is exactly what I was looking for! (except it only has 85HP - but it is a SUPER LIGHT 17' boat so I am sure it will pull a skier!)

THANKS AGAIN FOR THE INFO GUYS!

Well during that time OMC (Outboard Motor Corporation) owned Johnson AND Evinrude and produced motors under that name simultaniously (pretty nifty marketing if u ask me :D ). Late in the 90's Bombardier bought them out and have been producing engines under that name also.

In response to the relief ports (2 holes/slots) that is where exhaust will come out of along with water. It will be more like a mist coming out of those. They are there to allow the engine to run while idleing in water as the backpressure of the water does not allow the engine to exhaust through the prop/trim tab.

Also, you may put in your own teltale if you wish but get the OK of obj first :) as it requires drilling and tapping. Personally i would do it as you know your baby is cooling itself properly.

Do us all a favor butteco and buy the OMC shop and parts manual for your motor.

myoutboards, I'm not in any way, shape, or form making an argument but I have 77 Rude and it doesn't have telltale, just the two ports on back that spray comes from. At least I hope that's the case with mine. Butteco, do make sure that dirt daubers haven't made their way into them holes, them holes are perfect size for all sorts of bugs to make a home in. I had a wood-boring bumblebee checking mine out not long ago.

Sorry for the NEW.B question (okay 3 of them), but DOES OMC OWN EVINRUDE OR SOMETHING? (why would I want the OMC manual for an evinrude?)

ALSO,

The two large holes midway up the motor, are those the 2 "ports" you are referring to, in which water is supposed to spew out?

ALSO:

ALSO - Can someone tell me what WOT RPMS I should be turning? Again, I have the 1975 85HP Evinrude.

THANKS!

well OMC manufactured Johnson and Evinrude, but is now owned by Bombardier---who make jet skis, snowmobiles. You can get a Clymer or Seloc manual, or hunt down an OMC book. I wouldn't mind having an OMC book myself. I've heard 5500-6000 at WOT from a couple folks. Yes the two ports are where the water spray should be coming from.
