Hi everyone.

I just moved near the water, and went out on a friends boat for the first time in my life. I had a great time, so I found an 86 Bayliner 125 for a thousand bucks. The guy before me put about a hundred hours on it. He never ran seafoam or rebuilt the carbs, so thats my first step. How hard is that? The motor runs o.k., so what else should I do to it?

Also, what's a cheap way to clean all that white stuff off the hull?

Also, what size fuel tank does it have?

It says to run leaded 85, is unleaded o.k.?

Also, what model is my boat?

The boat is stamped BY1B34CGB686

The motor is model 1251X6B serial 1314

That's the only questions I can think of right now. Thanks in Advance.

Oh yeah, the electricals are all messed up. The horn, nav lights, speedometer, fuel quantity guage, all don't work. Where do I start with that?

Re: just bought my first boat!

Welcome to iboats. There are two really high points in boat ownership. The day you buy it and the day you sell it. The rest is full of woe. Just kidding. It's a good idea to use the seafoam. Not at all hard to do. You didn't specify if your motor is Force or Chrysler. Most Force or Chrysler motors with tillotson carbs are pretty easy to re-build. Use a good marine gel coat cleaner on the hull. Then put a good coat of carnuba wax on it, maybe even going over it 2-3 times. Don't know what size fuel tank it has, but unleaded fuel works fine. Be sure you mix your oil and gas at a ratio of 50:1. Use a good quality two stroke oil for this.

Just as a precaution, I would change out the water pump impeller and change the lower unit lube to start with.

For your electrical problems, check for a blown fuse under your instrument panel.

Maybe someone else can answer your other questions. Happy boating!!

The first thing you should do is get one of these
FORCE MANUAL
Even if you dont plan on being a mechanic this manual will teach you everything you need to know. The impeller replacement should be done every other year and the gear lube should also be changed as mentioned. The manual will show you how to do these things. If motor is running good now just have fun with it. Get the manual and slowly start doing things that is going to make it last. If you have questions about the manual you dont understand go to the force forum and do a search using your question as a search engine. If you are unable to find or understand what you are looking for post your questions here and someone will try and help you. Good luck and enjoy your boat.

Re: just bought my first boat!

Force was bought by mercury before it got discontinued so you can order alot of parts from merc.
Outboards have a what is basically a transmission (lower unit) in front of the prop- This is filled with gear oil-- easy to change -- just use the search feature as eurolarva said for instructions-
That white stuff is proabably oxidation from the gelcoat- I used 3m marine fiberglass restorer on mine (wal-mart $10 in the marine section) I would wait on rebuilding the carbs if it's running good, just run seafoam thru there-
Here are a couple of tips:

If you ever here a loud buzzer when using it TURN IT OFF- that's the overheat buzzer and if you keep running it when hot you will ruin piston/block/ring pick one (or two, or three :D )

Don't hook up the battery backwards (sounds like common sense, but alot of people have done it and fried all kind of $$$$ electronics on their motor)

Never run it out of the water unless you have it in a bucket of water, or have muffs on it hooked to a hose-

The motor is a 86 - not sure of the boat model

your impeller is what pumps water thru your motor thus cooling it off - they are cheap and relatively easy to change- there made of rubber and if they wear out or get old/brittle you will prob overheat motor
you can see it's part 59 here:

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...6/30.png&inbr=1227&bnbr=10&bdesc=GEAR+HOUSING

Re: just bought my first boat!

Oh, I just bought a 1987 bayliner and I had problems with the above mentioned wireing. Turns out the fuses and fuse connections underneath the steering wheel had serious corrosion. I had to clean all of them and there were a few connections that were bad. The fuse box makes perfect sense if you set and look at it. Therefore you can clean it and move ground/hot wires around to get a good fuse connector if you suspect that. Hopefully that all makes sense...

Re: just bought my first boat!

The electrical issue could be as simple as a loose wire on the battery. Every now and then my horn, lights, and radio stop working, but the motor works fine. I go and tighten up the nut on the battery post and it starts working again.

By posting in the electrical thread.

As stated above you need to run the wires and clean terminals. Best bet is to get a voltage meter to "see" where the electricty is or is not.

That wiring job they did was for the birds on my boat it is no longer in it. that Its all in the trash now. I redid all the wiring in my boat and all new guages and horn, nav lights...etc.

I hope you have a lot of fun once you get things sorted out. Don't let people fool you those force motors are still fixable and are fairly reliable too if you take care of them a bit. Same as any other engine.

Re: just bought my first boat!

I really hate a double post.

P.S. The maintainence things to do are-
1. Change the water pump impeller.
2. Check the Thermostat.
3. Change the oil in lower unit. Be sure you change the seal for the screws too.
4. Change the spark plugs
5. ALWAY MIX THE FUEL AND OIL AT 50:1.
6. Change the fuel pump and clean the screen.
7. Install an inline fuel filter.

To start motor-
1. Pump the fuel bulb till firm.
2. Turn key to run position.
3. Pull out throttle and advance about 1/4 open.
4. Push key in andf hold while turning to start position.
5. Engine should start in 10 seconds or less.
6. If it does not start wait ten seconds and pump bulb firm.
7. If it does not start then you will need to check everything unless its warm you may not need to choke try starting without pushing in key.

Hope this helps some.
