Just bought trailer tires and they're already 2 years old

Been reading trailer tires are good for 3-5 years.

Just received a set of Kenda KR25 Radials with these date codes. (Plus had to wait 2 weeks for delivery)

1411 (April 2011)
4610 (Nov 2010)

Does warehouse time effect age? Should I return?

age is from the date its made not the date it is sold. tires should be replaced every 6 years and in some countrys thats a requirement which sucks because that also means the spare tire. Always try to use a large outlet with high stock turn over as theres will normally be the newest tires. As for returning im not sure what protection the buyer has in this situation

3-5 years??? maybe if you wear them out in that amount of time, but I would think they will last longer than that . . .

After DOT (Usually inside) is where they generally are. 4 digit is manufacturing Week/Year

WOW! That is a tought one for sure. It makes me want to buy them locally now instead of Internet purchase and check such things even paying more... I guess you could return them and request a more up-to-date set, but you probably will have to pay return shipping and maybe even restocking fees...

there was a big whoha about 12 years back when people bought new tires that would blow out causing wrecks. it turned out that the tires had been in a storage warehouse/ma and pa garages for years and were up to 10-15 years old when they were installed so it became big news about tire age causing wrecks (same time all the ford explorers kept rolling over due to tire pressure)

From the past they decieded that tires should not be over 6 years old, trucks should have tire pressure sensors and body roll control should be standard. Trailer tires are diffrent but why buy a old tire when you wanted a new one (3-6 months is kinda exceptable but 2 years isnt)

A tire starts to deteriorate when it comes out of the mold and why they are dated. I would call and see about returning them. Had a local shop try the exact same thing.

No need to crack the code.

The first 2 digits is the week and the last 2 is the year. No need to use a website.

I bought two new Load Star tires for a 2005 boat trailer I have here just so I had fresh tires to go pick up a boat I bought 200 miles away, the tires were new and date coded 3611, both are dry rotted now to the point they won't hold air. they didn't last at all. They have less than 450 miles on them and their already leaking. The tires that came on a brand new trailer I bought last summer are also already dryrot cracked on the sidewalls. Both trailers have sat in an unheated garage, yet they still cracked. The new trailer has Carlisle USA Trail tires that are dated 1212 and 1112, both are showing some pretty serious cracking. Yet the same Carlisle tires that are 15 years old on my utility trailer, that sits outdoors all the time still look fine.
They've changed something in the rubber these days, new tires don't last like they used to. There's something wrong when a set of two year old tires crack and split while a set 15 years old are still fine.

by 95 yacht club under my crestliner has tires dated from 1994... good tread left and no cracking. no idea how long they have actually been on there. this will be my 3rd year owning it.

Some thing changed in how tires were made around 2000, I have no idea what, just that it happened. My guess it was some thing in the material to cut costs. Just enough of what ever to make them last the 6 years the DOT requires and no longer and why watching the date coding is important.

15 years? I've got a set of tires on my pontoon trailer that are pushing 25 years by my best guess. They have never once been inside, they sit outside, on the ground, year round. (granted, they are protected from directly sunlight pretty much all the time by the pontoon above them.)

So i'm curious, where did the 6 year requirement ever come from? I've searched through the DOT, and I don't find a single reference to it. It certainly isn't law... In fact, they openly admit on their site that some tire manufacturers (who would have an interest in selling you new tires) recommend 10 years... Also, they only talk about vehicles, not trailers.

I'd return them. That's way too old. Check out easternmarine for replacements. They have good prices and service and I believe are pretty popular so should have fresher inventory.

Good question. I looked at Kenda's web site and there's no warranty info on Trailer tires. I do recall someone writing "some countries " have a 6 year limit.

I have a call into Kenda. We'll see what they say about age. Wanted to get my facts straight before I formally disputed.

If it is not to inconvenient to return them, I would or at least complain. Maybe you could use this as leverage to get some discount. I think the next time you will check the date before buying. If the dealer fails to work with you I would not patronize him in the future and threaten to post your experience on a social network. If all else fails I would not sweat this too much.

I will have to go back and see if I can find the 6 year thing, I read it some place recently, and I may of mis-read it. A quick look seams to be more on warranty than DOT.

LOL, I was up at my folks cleaning up stuff with their OLD utility trailer and the tires on that beast must have been 20-30 years old. Worked fine to haul a couple tons of stuff to the dump....

I replaced my boat trailer tires less than 3 years ago and last spring one of the failed from separation and the rubber falling apart, huge cracks all over. At the time the other tire looked fine, but fast forward to last month and the other tire did the exact same thing. 2 new tires failed miserably at less than 3 years old (date code less than 3 years), and I always check the tire pressure before each trip and tow at a reasonable speed. I don't want to bash a company (since we don't have their side of the story) but the tire brand rhymes with Mow Taster

I asked the guy at the tire shop what caused this, other than the tires being cheap china carp, and if I was doing some thing wrong. He side-stepped the issue saying they recommend replacing trailer tires every 3-5 years,,, and then replaced the tire for free.............
