And I don't have an owners manual, so can someone tell me what the little rod that runs down the forward part of the lower unit is for, I think it's something to do with the locking of the engine for backing up. and also what is the screw at the top of the lower unit that says flush ?

Also now I took the lower unit off because it wasn't pumping water out the hole and found that the impeller is in little pieces. I've cleaned out everything and now need parts, where's the best place to get them ?

The rod is for your reverse lock-out. It keeps the engine from kicking up when you shift into reverse. As for the impellor, a local marine dealer should stock that part, if not check this site or Boats.net.
