Just curious ???

I work in the insurance industry, tied to a desk all day, ocasionally stealing glimpses of the internet and my favorite web site. Out of curiousity, what do the rest of you do ?? Just wondering, not trying to get too personal.

I do consulting (mostly testing and development stuff) for marine manufacturers. Done some racing and go to all the Hot Boat deals I can.<br /><br />Good post. I think we'll see some interesting things.<br /><br />Good luck!

I am predominantly a cgi programmer, I write shopping carts and payment gateway software, stuff like that..<br /><br />best thing is that it keeps me on the net about 14 hours a day, so I read this board alot..<br /><br />been working with/on boats since I was 5.. my father is a marine engineer, and I have never lived far from the coast.. <br /><br />As well as the coding, I also setup networks for companies, and my latest thing is to setup Linux servers to replace Microshaft boxes... lottsa money in that cos the microsoft software would have cost in excess of 5000, so getting the software free means I can charge more for setting it all up, (which is actually more time consuming) and I now have alot of happy clients running linux servers.. (most of whom don't know really what linux even is.)<br /><br />regards<br /><br />Frank

I am part manager in a cleaning company. Working at my desk most days, or travelling meeting staff or costumers. Relaxing repairing outboards and other mechanic for myselves and friends.

Well does this topic belong on "nothing to do with boats"<br /><br />I am retired from the Army (Engineering Instructor) and I own my own Special Effects business for movies. I am the person resposible for the big explosions (cars, airplanes, helocopters, smowmobiles, buildings, ski gondola's), fireballs, bullets strafing the walls, when you see an actor/actress shot and the blood comes out.... it makes every day differant. I work with a studio in Vermont and we do a variety of low budget action pictures for TV and cinema. I get my occasional cameo on film too. So, in short I have had my "15 minutes of fame" (in 10 second increments) thanks to the frequency that HBO airs movies. Best part ZERO INJURIES! I preach safe special effects. Yes, this is all under the watchful eyes of the BATF who issued my Federal License. (Not the type of stuff for kids to try at home) I have done commercial fireworks too (I love July 4th ) but, the movies are far more fun.<br /><br />Bob

Now Bob's got an exciting job! That sounds really cool. Me, I'm like most of you guy's and tied to a desk. I am Vice President of a small business( transportation co.). Not the most exciting job but I'm happy and I guess that's the most important thing. I can't wait to retire like some of you. I plan on buying a lake front resort somewhere in Minnesota or Wisconsin and doing nothing but fishing, boating, and talking with the visitors. Someday, until then I will continue to come to work and chat on this great board in my free time.

Very interestiing input from all. I used to work in the electrical industry but haven't done that for 5 1/2 years. I try to fish 3 or 4 times a week and play as much golf as I can. I live in a golf community where we have 11 nine hole courses and 5 championship courses. This is a real great place to live, The Villages, Florida.<br /><br />D.

I retired @ 38 after putting 20 years in a factory in Connecticut. I have a associates degree in mechanical engineering, an associates in accounting and masters in business management. I now own a small housing renovation company with 7 employees and boat 2-3 days a week and most weekends. Just got back from a trip about a 1/2 hour ago but thats a story for the stupid section.<br />Mike <br />

I work for a computer software company, doing all the customer support, keeping the office network running without hitches, debugging software in C++ and working with the Software engineers to help fix their bugs. I also get to put all the computers together, do some website work, to much to list. lol So I am also tied to the desk, and able to check this site when I can nolonger think. Our website if www.mtu.com<br /><br />What I really like doing is working on boats, and motorcycles. I tore the floor out of my bayliner and relaid all the wood and fiberglass, then recarpeted it and redid all the vinyl last year. That was some work, but worth it for the experience I got. Now I and a friend are in the process of rebudilding a 1977 Mercury 115 Inline 6, which will be new for me.<br /><br />Bryan Cox

I'm a Registered Psychiatric Nurse and have done 20+ years in Auckland New Zealand - 16 years on nights - I like fishing, hunting, flying and driving.<br />I get on the water every time I can in my 5m Pelin "Finally".<br />We are blessed to live in a country such as this with all it's water sports available. I've not long returned from a trip to the Chatham Islands.<br />Ross

Been an auto tech(used to be mechanic) for 25 years now. And my be another 20 to retirement. I have been around the water in some form or another all my life. My folks bought a lake house when I was 14. Spent most the time up to this point helping get it just so. My dad past away a few years ago and my mom is getting to old to deal with it so I had the opportunity to take over and that I did. I couldn't imagine not having the lake to go to on weekends with the family I have now. It's a money pit but we all love it. I took tomorrow off and am having a long weekend. To do some more repairs of course!

I am a Utility inspection supervisor for a local municipality...16 more months, and I get to retire (kind of) <br />I also own a small buisness, selling,servicing,installing CCTV systems.<br /><br />My engine experiance comes from my childhood,and young adulthood, where I maintained my father's <br />15-boat rental fleet at his fish camp in the Everglades. Also,he sponsored my Motocross racing in the 70's. I also wrenched for a local marina part time, and really enjoyed that more than any other thing I did before or since.<br />I would probably still be werking there, if the owner had not sold.<br />My hobbies are stock car racing, werkin on engines, ham radio, fishing,boating,fishing,muddin,fishing and boating.

Interesting, but not surprising to see that many of us work either in the computer industry or on computers (handy for easy access to iboats...).<br /><br />I'm a software developer by trade. I've spent most of my time over the last couple of decades developing packaged accounting and business management systems. My partners and I sold our business a couple of years ago, so now I'm catching up for all the time I didn't spend boating and fishing during my working marathon!<br /><br />I enjoy my visits to iboats - there's lots of great people here with plenty of knowledge, experience and some very funny stories. Plus, it restores my faith in humanity to see people freely helping each other like they do here.

I work in materials engineering (laboratory) for a leading automotive and heavy truck supplier. I determine the failure mode on components. We get many claims that the driver or trucking companies try to cash in on (warranty). Most are overloaded rigs and driver abuse. What most don’t understand is that when a part fails there is story to every fracture. I can determine the cause just by the fracture surface and the parts. It’s sorta like a CSI thing, its fun.
