Just got a 64 Evinrude 9.5

So I have a add in the paper trying to sell off all of my excess outboards, and I had a guy come and trade me a 64 'rude 9.5 for a 56 15 horse parts motor I had. He said it ran last year, I figured as long as it turned and had compression I would be okay.

I hooked up a gas tank and after a few pulls it ran. It was running rough, but running. I fiddled with the low speed and got it to idle. After about ten minutes it would start to miss and cut out, but kept running. It seemed like a coil issue so I swapped a set of new coils in that I had laying around, but that did not change the cutting out.

Sometimes it would run great, and then it would start running bad and then run great. I pulled the carb, but it was not dirty at all. Kind of baffling, but this seems to happen with every OMC motor I get ahold of. Eventually I get them to run good with fiddling.

My intent is to use it as a kicker after repainting it in updated white with modern decals, since it weighs the same as my 57 5.5 horse (I weighed them both, they are 60 lbs). Also, I assume it is 50:1. Any insight on the mysterious on again off again missing and cutting out would be appreciated...

That engine can have problems with exhaust gases leaking under the hood from a bad rubber ring seal around the lower exhaust housing, and shroud. Have you tried running it with the hood off?

What did the plugs look like after running? Both wet or dry?Are they J4C Champions?Did you ever get any compression readings?

Hate to ask so many questions ,but did you insure that the carb had no restrictive deposits in any of the orifices or ports while you had it off?Float and needle valve operated and was set right and all?

I went ahead and blew out all the passages in the carb, although I could not find any dirt anywhere. The plugs are J4Cs, although a bit skanky. I put some J8Cs in that were fresh just to compare, and there was no difference. Like I said, it would purr flawlessly, then run rough, then purr again. I'll do more fiddling tomorrow after putting the carb back on. One thing I noticed was it runs a lot better with the thermostat in. I took the 'stat out and was running it, and it ran worse without it. The 'stat does work (I checked it with a thermometer and water on the stove). I put the 'stat back in. Bear in mind this is all in my ghetto test tank because I still have to put the lower unit back on my main motor and go out on the water.

I am quite sure just tweeking the setup will resolve it, my 5.5 did the same exact thing and tweeking the low speed adjustment fixed everything on that motor.

Also, this motor is 50:1 right?

Yes Jason, 50:1 fuel mix.

It ran better with the t-stat in because the block was warming up to design temp which aids the combustion process.

If you havn't done so, pop the flywheel and take a look at the points. Make sure they are set to .020 and in good shape. Poor points can cause erotic idling.

Erotic idling... :) I got The carb back on and fired her up. After a bit of tweeking on the low speed knob, she was idling good. Now its time for paint...

Must be in the idle part: "idle minds"; "idle hands"; etc.
