It might have the same leg and a Merc ignition system, but that's where the similarity will end. The powerhead is totally different from a Merc. Closer to a Chrysler. ELPT=Electric start, Longshaft, Power Trim/Tilt.<br /><br />Never run the motor without supplying water to the water pump. It has to be in the water, or you can get a set of muffs to connect a garden hose. Always mix oil into the gas at a rate of 16oz/6gal. No matter how tempting it is and no matter how many other people you see do it, DON'T START THE MOTOR ON THE RAMP BEFORE LAUNCHING. The water pump is damaged in as little as 10 seconds.

I have a 86 Force and it floods VERY easily. It took me being stranded 4 times before figuring out how to start it when it is flooded. My controller won't allow me to fully open the throttle when in neutral, so I have to remove the cowling manually hold the throttle and have my wife start it. Be prepared to quickly release the throttle level once it starts. Get that one done and you will be good to go.<br /><br />Another thing, ALWAYS follow the proper maintenance schedule. If your motor is well cared for, it should provide you with many happy years of service. Good Luck!
