I just p/u a boat from a friend who has had it sitting for about a year and a holf. He said that the shaft broke and his dad had it relaced and tuned up. The skeg is almost completely broken off and the prop is bent to hell. How can I tell if he truely had the shaft replaced and tuned up. Also he said that the mech. turned off the oil injection because he left the oil filler cover on the housing open and the oil reservoir had water in it. I just started messing with the motor and the compression is 120 psi per cylinder. That is as far as I have gotten. I dont know much about boat motors so I didnt want to mess anything up.. Any info would help

Hi,

1. Replaced shaft: any document showing his dad actually bought a new or second hand shaft?

2. Skeg: You can use a skegguard if you want, if you have 2-3 inches of skeg remaining.

3. Oil injection: 2% oil (50:1, gas:eek:il) is what you should use now in gas.
I do not know if you should try to get the oil injection system work again. Just clean the oil reservoir and check all houses etc. You can try it but still use 2% oil in gas so You do not break your outboard because of poor lubrication in case oil injection system does not work. See if oil is consumed in the oil reservoir.
The outboard will run better with oil injection system, oil supply is variable by RPM (150:1 at low rpm, at full throttle 50:1). You will really get little to much oil at low rpm without oil injection.

4. Bent prop: Maybe a Propulse prop http://www.propulse.se/english/index.html can be an alternative?
Make sure the propshaft is not bent! It will give vibrations You and the outboard will not like at all.
A trick is to take the prop off, then turn the propshaft and use a pice if metal or similar close to the shaft and se if it stay same distance all the time. That will at least give an indication if the DT85 shaft is reasonably straight or bent.

If You post Your DT85 serial nr it is possible to tell what Year it is. It is good to know if you need spare parts. Good source is brownspoint.com (Parts Look-Up).

If You decide to start using your DT85 it is probably wise to invest in a new inpeller kit unless You know it has been changed in a year or two or similar.
New spark plugs and new oil (plus gasket on lower oil plug) in lower unit is wise to use . And grease all grease points also with water resistant grease.

Unless you know it, if you have NA12S remote control box, you press key in to activate chocke before you turn the key when outboard is cold. That way it will start much easier. You have on NA12S also a lever you can move up to increase rpm while in netral gear.

You are better running the motor on pre-mix, so leave the oil injection as is to avoid further hassles, the compression seems to be ok, as it sounds to me, this motor has had quite a bit of an accident, change the plugs and get a new prop, if the motor vibrates out of the ordinary, you will know that the motor haven't been tuned up after the shaft replacement ...
