changed the starter, started her up and no compression in 2 cylinders.
They said they pulled the valve cover and one of the valve springs was broken.
They said that they are going to change that and see if it fixes it.
Question is, if only one valve spring is broken then why is there no compression in 2 cylinders. My guess is my pistons are toast. They already started the valve spring change and said if that does not work then they have to pull the head to see. Should I waste time on labor removing the head if the valve spring does not work because I will most likely have to get a new motor or a rebuild. If i rebuild i will most likely be taking the motor to another shop.
What do you think
454 mercruiser magnum in a 1989 baja sport

Changing a valve spring
is done by putting compressed air
in cyl to hold valve up.
This is the makings a leakdown
test. The shop should know how
tight your cyl is when fixing
spring.
Discuss this with them.

sorry i do not really understand.
I understand how to change the spring but not sure what you mean by how tight your cyl is (do you mean if there is compression after they change the valve spring?

Leak down test will tell
mechanic if the cyl "seals" well.
Discuss with your mechanic

thats what he means. i think your wasting money on the spring job if only one is broken, and there is a prob with two cylinders. who knows maybe the rocker nut needs adjusting on the other cylinder, could be a frozen lifter to

that what i asked the mechanic. why are you replacing the spring when you have no compression in 2 cylinders, that will only fix the one cylinder...might be time to find another mechanic.
