Just in case...OMC water pump

I am about ready to take my boat out for its maiden voyage after 6 months of restoration. The only part I do know if it works or not is the outdrive water pump. I have been running it with the garden hose hooked up. Just in case I have problems with the water pump how hard is it to change? OMC 120 outdrive.

Thanks

Not hard, but if you run that motor without one, things become slightly more difficult........

One other thing, waterpumps like to give out on either their first time being started up after a while, or their first time going into higher rpms. I have 6 motors, and usually change the pump in each one once a year or so.

If in doubt- change it out.

The main reason for changing that impeller every few years is to grease the splines of the w/p shaft. If you aren't sure there's good waterproof grease in there, best to check.

Can this be done without removing the outdrive?

technically, yes... but removing the outdrive is usually a 10 minute job and it will tend to make impeller replacement easier/better.
I'm too old to work with my neck all cranked around upside down. Upper gearbox out and sitting on a sturdy bench the way to go.

I am probably too old also at 71, but I am not excited to have to remove the outdrive again after just doing that to center the steering...SO could you take the time to give me a step by step sequence in replacing the pump? I have the manual but it seems like there is much more steps then is necessary.

yes. the exh cover is the only holding the upper in there
once exh cover is off, you can lift the upper gearbox up and out of the lower/exh housing
