Hello, I was running my boat at night and somehow the water ears fell off the drive, and for a couple of minutes it was ran with no water. It started smoking from the drive, and i shut it off. I opened up the water pump in the drive and it was totally melted with peices missing from the impeller, and shreds of the impeller everyware. I ordered the cmplete wp kit with housing. It there anything else I can check out after I install a new Water pump?

Try to account for all of the pieces of the impeller. You might have to remove the feed hose from the motor and back-flush it while the pump is still off. Also check all water hose fittings on the motor to see if any chunks lodged there. You might also have to remove the drive to see if any chunks lodged in the water hose fitting on the bell housing.

You might want to look for pieces of the impeller in the power steering oil cooler, mounted on the rear of the engine. The raw water hose comes in from the tramsom, goes into the cooler, then up to the thermo housing. I'd also remove the thermo housing and look in there. When you remove the impeller, you will find you have go replace the housing, so get the whole impeller kit. Make sure the gasket for the plastic housing seals correctly.
Finally as Bondo said, check the rubber exhaust hoses for damage.
I use the dual inlet Tempo muffs, they fit nice and tight on the lower unit.

The boat does not have power steering. I will take off the thermostat housing and check all that out. Where are the rubber exaust hoses that might have melted? Thanks

Its a 1987 OMC Cobra 2.3L Ford. I am planning on backflushing and taking apart a few things, & look over all the hoses. Whats the best way to backflush the system? I have a automotive flush kit. The engine did not even get hot, It did not over heat the engine.

for parts ID, look at
www.dougrussell.com
look in the parts section under OMC, look up your year, engine, and look in cooling/exhaust system and you'll see them all.
