I took a good look at my oil fill vents on my lower unit and what I found was a mess. I used a dremel tool to smooth them out and went to the Hardware store and bought rubber o rings. I used them for the gaskets on the new screws to get a positive seal. I was told that that wasn't a good idea? Any thoughts?

o-rings work well in grooves for sealing, they don't however work very well when squished.

Thanks for the reply, Jimmbo. I have to admit that I used a large driver to tighten them up but the person that told me they may not be good was worried about a breakdown from the oil. I don't have a lot of confidence in the ones that come with the new screws due to my vent holes being a bit rougher than normal from use and abuse. Any other good alternative?

Use the OEM blue gaskets that are made to seal, even if the surface isn't perfect. O-rings really don't work well.

Thanks, GA_Boater.....
I will order up a few of those if there isn't a better alternative. I was thinking about a thick soft nylon, about twice as thick as the standard rings of fiber.

The blue gaskets are rubber-like, not fibrous.

I got these at my local Merc dealer - [h=1]12-19183 3 - Seal -Blue[/h]
