Just painted the hull- can I wax now?

Just painted the hull on my 1968 MFG.<br />I used Interlux precote primer then two coats of brightside paint. I did it all by brush and I think it came out great. Do I have to wait before I wax this baby or can I do it now? Thanks

I think as long as it is dry, you can wax it, but I no pro painter.

Whats the rush?<br />We don't know where you are located, I don't recommend waxing any new paint job for a while.<br /><br />Some waxes contain Petroleum Distillates that could damage the finish. Your boat, you decide.

I'm living in CT, its about 50-65 during the day.<br />Its going in a slip soon and waxing at the dock could be a pain. Thought maybe I should wait but now I'm confused.... the hull is black and thought maybe some wax would protect the gloss.<br />????? What wax should I use if any?

Interlux sez:<br />Do not apply heavy coats as this will affect dry through. Failure to follow proper dry times carefully will cause improper drying, wrinkling and loss of adhesion. Avoid painting in direct sunlight. Product temperature should be minimum 10°C/50°F and maximum 29°C/85°F. Ambient temperature should be minimum 10°C/50°F and maximum 35°C/95°F. Substrate temperature should be minimum 10°C/50°F and maximum 29°C/85°F.<br />-------------------------------------------------- <br />You painted the boat at the bottom of the suggested temp. I don't think [my opinion]that there has been sufficient time for the paint to harden. Pick up the phone and call one of their distributors listed on the net and get expert advise. Since it is black, putting in the water to quick could cause it to blush.

Thanks- It was within the temp range and it dried <br />quickly in about 2 1/2 hours. I'll probably wait a week or so- then maybe use a wax or Interlux wax sealer.

Actually I am using Interflux now (I am spraying it) and I have used it before. The paint stays soft for awhile. Like weeks. When it gets hot after sitting in the sun it gets even softer. So be careful with it for awhile. You can wax but I would not use a buffer and do it on a cool, cloudy day. If you have the time I would give it a couple weeks.

Any solvent based paint takes sometime to fully cure. Could be weeks in fact depending on temp and humidity. Even thought the surface feels hard, the inner material takes time for the solvents to evaporate completely. Sealing the paint before this has occured results in blistering, rippling and poor adhesion as mentioned above. I would wait at least 3 weeks before applying any wax or sealer.

I just finished painting my own boat with an Intelux product (very happy with their paint) and I contacted Interlux with your same waxing concern and was informed that it shouldn't need waxing till the end of the season, or at least not for a couple of months. For care - wash with boat soap. Hope this helps.
