Serial Number BAAS 1207453.

Was used very little on a barge shuttle boat.

1. What I should look out for on this engine.....any weak spots? It is supposed to be less than 50 hours total.

2. The engine is manual start, but it has a regulator/rectifier in the front of the engine.......does this mean it has battery charging capabilities?

3. I used to have a 2002 or so Honda outboard that had ventilation holes just above the anti-cavitation plate.....made it back up really strong. Can I drill these holes into this older engine to achieve the same power in reverse?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Re: Just purchased around 1990 Honda 15

An update, although I would still appreciate any additional information anybody has out there.

Local dealer looked up the serial number and clarified it is indeed a 1990 model. It does have a charging circuit, but the cord that runs from the outboard to the battery is $55. No spin-on oil filter.......some type of internal filter.......anybody know anything about this type filter? There isn't anything in the owners manual about servicing it. No carburetor kit either......have to order individual parts as needed. Impeller is $20.

Again, I appreciate any additional information anybody has. Thanks

Re: Just purchased around 1990 Honda 15

I have been running a 93 Honda 15hp since new and have not really had a serious problem with it. I did have to go to a hotter thermostat to help the gas evaporate since I use it mainly for trolling while salmon fishing.
I don't think I would be drilling any holes though.
I just replace the impeller for the 1st time this spring. That was a real chore, but only because of the HONDA factory cross threading the shift linkage nut ( never did get that apart, even in a vice I had to take it apart from the top at the shift handle. No corrision was visable)and cross threading one of the lower unit bolts. Not a sign of any corrision, it just snapped off because of the crossed threads. I had to drill it out and was able to get it back together ok and runs great. I would recommend changing the oil about every 25-30 hours of run time.

Thanks for the post Gary........I had searched through the threads and found your post about those troubles. I hope this engine turns out to be a good one. Do you use a water separator/fuel filter with yours, or do you rely on the stock fuel filter? Have you ever had to do carb work? If so, are the gaskets easily reusable? Was the hotter thermostat from Honda or did you make something else work? Do you have a part number?

The holes I'm talking about are about 1/4" diameter.....they come stock on the new 15's. If mine doesn't back up very good I will try to contact technical support at honda to determine where to drill the holes. I had a johnson 15 once that didn't back up good and johnson offered to send me a template showing me where to drill holes to make it back up better.......that's the only reason I'm interested in doing it to this Honda.

Anyway, thanks again for the response.

I use a water separator/fuel filter as I also run my 200 Merc on the same filter. I have no idea about the thermostat part number, I told the dealer that I was making gas and he handed me the hotter stat to install, I thing they are about $20.00. I have never had to do anything with my carb. I do run seafoam w/gas. I ran it for 6 hrs trolling today fishing, never missed a beat, real strong pee stream.
