Harbor freight special $20 bucks. Is there any reason not to have automatic winch for boat? They also have black and gold plated one $30 bucks with ability to set it forward or rev. I mounted it up and works nice for money paid but wonder about a big object hitting boat trailer while towing and allowing the sucker to freespool my boat off. It is way better than old one though cheap rope attached rusty winch.

the winch isn't supposed to keep your boat on the trailer if you hit something while towing. that is what the SAFETY CHAIN is for. Winches are for winching, chains are for making sure it stays there after you winch it.

You should have a safety chain on the boat incase the winch lets go.

(Bold is above is mine) Get a safety chain on the bow in addition to the winch. This is true for either a manual or electric winch.

I don't know, maybe it depends on how you load. I spent years loading with a had crank. Bought my current boat and it came with a 3000 pound electric winch. I can't find much use for it. Any load and it slows down. To me, it seems slower than the hand crank. I usually just put the crank on and do it by hand. But I tend to idle on to the trailer, shut down the motor and only have to crank a few feet. If my winch cable had to be let out 20 feet to get to the bow then bring it all in, I may use the electric winch to make it faster. Maybe on a real shallow ramp.

I do know this, when the winch goes, I won't be replacing it with another electric model.

Personal opinion. I would not consider an electric winch for a boat my size. Very easy to crank up by hand and less to go wrong or start failing.
Always use a safety chain as previously stated.

Yes harbor freight has many options on winches!!! Plus add 20 percent off coupon some stuff is a deal. I do have a saftey chain from previous setup and installed. The heavier 2000lb straps and winch seemed heavyyyyy to me but for big boat might work on the cheap. Im afraid of HF towing accessories though the 800lb jack seemed ok but beware of dual wheel jack i had mine fail twice when new and returned save a broken foot and pass it on.
