Water in the oil causes it to become milky.

Cracked block, cracked head, blown head gasket.
You need to do a leakdown test to determine where the leak is.
Do a google search for "Leakdown test"

Don,

Thanks for the response. I did a compression test and the reading as 100 PSI on 1, 3 and 110 on 2, 4(but the throttle was not wide open). A couple of guys said that it was not the head gasket. Any advise.

Thanks again.

JC

Pull the dip stick, is the oil clean or milky?

A leakdown test is different to a comp test.

Aldo

I agree with Bondo. If the only place you see the milky stuff is in or under the valve cover it could be that your engine just isn't getting hot enough for a long enough period of time to "dry" out the condensation that occurs naturally due to the heat up/cool down process that an engine undergoes.

Re: Just removed the Valve Cover and milky oil

RODBOLT posted a while back that the Mercruiser spec for getting an engine up to working temps is in water, over 2000 rpm, under load....i.e. in gear... for 20 minutes or more.

Have you been running for short periods on muffs in the driveway?

What do your spark plugs look like?

Re: Just removed the Valve Cover and milky oil

Keith,

Thanks for the response. The engine was running for more than 1-2 hrs at the lake before it started to heat up. I check the engine and there was a lot of milky oil coming out from the valve cover. The sparks plugs are clean except for one. The spark plug 3 has a lot of oil. Advise

Thanks

JC

You have a water intrusion problem from what it sounds like.

Please explain the overheat circumstances. Also post your specs.

Re: Just removed the Valve Cover and milky oil

Keith,

Thanks for the response. I have a 18 feet Chirs Craft 1986. The engine is 120 HP 2.5L Mercruiser. I was at lake when the engine started to heat up at full speed. I thought that it was a flow problem. I try not to go at full throttle. The engine start to get wrost. So I stop and check out the engine. When I lift the cover up. There was so much milky oil coming out from the valve cover. I was towed back. I am try to find out where the problem is. I started with exhaust and the riser but I am not sure what I am looking for. There is no crack by visual inspection. What should I look for?
I appreciate you help.

Thanks

When you do a cmpression test make sure the engine is at operating temp. Start and run on the muffs for 10 minutes or so.

If there is a crack in a head or block, it is possible it won't be as evident until the engine is warmed up and the metal expands.

Re: Just removed the Valve Cover and milky oil

I suspect a bad manifold/riser or a bad seal between the two......You have low compression #'s How old are the manifold/riser? Replace them if they are over 5-7 years old....You are looking at a rebuild soon with those compreesion #'s though. With a bad exhust system you will get seepage past the rings quickly. Have you pulled and examined the plugs?.....JK

Re: Just removed the Valve Cover and milky oil

Thanks guys,

After removed the exhaust/intake, I decided to run other compression test. This time all cylinders has a compression of 120 PSI. Please advise if a crack head, block, or a gasket is still a possible. I have conducted a visual inspection but I found no evidence of crack head or block. Any advise will be really appreciated.

JC

Re: Just removed the Valve Cover and milky oil

What did the interior of the manifolld look like? (exhaust side) And the plugs? With low compression #'s .ie 120# you will get water past your rings in a hurry.....My advice is... If you want to keep the boat, replace the manifold/riser.....If the condition persists.....Pull the head and replace the gasket....While the head is off have it tested for truenees & leaks(warp) & the block mating surface as well...Or better yet get a new one....If it still persists...You have a cracked/porous block & need a new one.....So ...Gaskets and time are cheap...If you have them.....If it is a bad block and you have spent the money on the manifold/riser/head then you allready have them & I would reccomend that with a re-built short block you can't go wrong....With those #'s its life is short anyway, especially because of the water intrusion....It just depends on how much you want to keep this particular boat....IMHO....JK

Just how much milky oil on valve stem? If it is just a slight streak then it could possibly be condensation on top of the valve cover dripping down. Can always hope anyway.

This is Very Different than,........
This,...................

Drain the Block,+ Cap off the water jacket,...... Then,
Pressurize the water jacket of the block with about 15/20lbs of Air,+ Listen,...........
You Shouldn't hear Any air movement,...... I'm betting you Will.....

It Sounds like a Major Over-Heat to Me......
