Just saved myself

Well,Just returned from the local steakhouse for dinner.Started choking on the first(too big) piece of sirloin.Tried to swallow but was unsuccessful.Notified my wife and daughter of my situation by displaying the universal choking sign by placing my hand at my throat.I then stood up and wife grabbed me from behind around midsection and attempted to squeeze with no success. She was not doing it right and I didn't have time or ability to give instructions. Our waiter then attempted and was also not applying near enough thrust in the proper location. It was then that all of these years of first aid and choking instruction that I have partaken in over my years in industry began to kick-in.I grabbed the nearest chair and while slightly bending over the back of it ,I dead dropped my weight at the upper abdominal area and (kablooey),out came the half of cow I tried to swallow.Instant relief. Some of the people eating in the area applauded lightly and many consoled me after incident. One lady asked me how I knew to do this choking procedure and I told her what I just told ya'll.I finished eating(smaller bites) ;) and am back home now.I strongly urge anyone reading this to insure that you and yours are well versed in saving a life of someone choking as in my case, the life might be yours.Sorry for the dramatics ,but believe it or not ,it is just beginning to set in ,and I am deeply grateful to be typing this.I also think I'm just a bit more aware of how fragile life and things can be in just a split second. Please for the sake of you and yours ,learn the dang Heimlich(sp) maneuver and self choking methods.Noone should have to die from choking on food. :)

Re: Just saved myself

Glad to hear ya made it out of it ob. Heimlick, CPR, etc are great tools if used correctly, and still good in most cases even if used a little incorrectly. My dad and uncle save my grandmother about ten years ago with cpr, neither had any real training on it, just little bits and peices. Once again glad to see it worked for you.

Ob... whew... that was a very close one. I've taken a First Aid class in college, and I have taken several first aid classes while I was in the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Man am I glad you made it out ok. I always wondered how well the chair in the abdomen thing worked or not. Glad to hear you are ok. I wonder if your throat might be a little raw over the next few days.

Sean

Re: Just saved myself

Thanks for the concern guys.eeboater, the chair method worked so well with just the first thrust that it has still got me in somewhat of an amazed state of mind.Mind you as we speak, this was just short of an hour ago.Life is a good thing.I'll be eating smaller bites and chewing longer in the future. You know,I've almost choked a few times over the years as I'm sure just about everyone has.Just was always able to either get it down or back up without much intervention. It all happened very fast.I'm really fuzzy on what everyone in the rooms was doing as I was concentrating intensely on staying cool enough to react in a beneficial way.Whole thing only lasted about 25 seconds.

Re: Just saved myself

I've had both cpr and heimlich training, although it was a while ago. I pray I never need to use it, although I would in a heartbeat if needed.

Glad you knew about the chair, ob. I've heard of it, but don't know if I would have remembered in the same situation. Good job!

Glad to hear you're ok, OB. That's a scary deal there. 25 seconds probably seemed like an eternity. Take care and smaller bites...

Re: Just saved myself

Kinda on topic kinda off topic... when I was in my CPR/First Aid class in college a gal had a siezure right in the middle of class.

I thought it was a test, quiz, example, something like that until the professor went into CPR mode and cancelled class.

SCARED THE LIVING POOP OUT OF ME!!!

We just learned about how to handle people having siezures the week earlier.

I know the Heimlich and the chair deal, so I can move right on to humor, right?

I learned cpr and the heimlich in the army, but that was back in 86, and I've forgotten it a long time ago.
Glad to see you made it through OB. Quick thinking.

No offense taken QC.Me and the wife already had a few chuckles over the colateral appetite damage inflicted upon some of the onlookers. My condolences to them.I mean ..this thing didn't look of this world.I felt like every eye in the place was observing each bite of food I took following the episode waiting for the sequel.

Re: Just saved myself

Never heard of the chair deal.
My training was long ago.
Maybe it is time to take a refresher course.

Glad things worked out well for you.

A 19 year old girl just 6 houses down, died last month, while eating burger. No one there to help her but her 3 year old sister who fortunately was napping at the time.

web page

Here's a link that shows the maneuver.I didn't use my fist but rather just thrusted my midsection onto the chair back.It worked first time.

Many eating places make it mandatory to have at least one person on staff at all times trained in CPR and hiemlik (sp)

Hey Crab good to see you around. Hows the winter been treating you? hope your camped out on an indoor job.

Re: Just saved myself

Glad you are ok, ob.
I have been doing first aid for over 8 years now. It is quite important knowledge.
One time I looked over at my friend and his hand was in his mouth and his face was ghostly white.
He was too embarrassed to tell me that he was choking, so he just shoved his hand in his mouth as far as he could.
Next thing you know, he pulls out a huge chunk of meat.
I told him, next time tell me, I know what to do. He jokingly said, "So do I, did you see how I saved myself?" I just shooked my head at him.

Anyways.....glad to hear that you are ok ob.
