Just starting on Evinrude 33hp...

I was given a 33horse evinrude a while back and am gonna finally get it going. It cranked up when I first brought it home but needs some work to run right. I have seen where some of these models had generators on them. Mine is a 1970 model (33E70M). Can anyone tell me if this motor has one? If it does where would it be and what does it look like? Thanks

It would be along side of the carb and have a belt from the flywheel driving it.

A pic of the motor would be good but that 1970 probably has a magneto. Does it have a rewind starter?

yes it does have a rewind starter as well as electric. from what I can gather, the electric model did not come with a generator and you just have to charge the battery occasionally. does that make sense? or if it has a magneto, is that what charges the battery. i'm pretty good at mechanic...ing, but mostly lost on electrical stuff.

thank you for the links. that should help...as long as I can figure out what it needs. impeller for sure, probably carb kit. electrically I have no clue and i'm sure i'll be posting lots of questions as I go along

just did a little reading and what I get is the magneto basically bumps up the incoming 12 volts to around 20,000 to fire the plugs. a rectifier actually recharges the battery. does that sound right?

If you don't have a generator on it, there's no way to charge the battery. You'll have to charge it yourself.

Wrong!!!! Well for that motor it is wrong. Yes it is magneto ignition, but magneto ignition generates its own electricity----like a lawn mower. It doesn't even need a battery to run. That electricity powers the ignition system only. If you want battery charging, you need the generator kit. For that motor, the generator looks similar to the starter motor, but on the opposite side of the carburetor and driven by a belt. It is a DC generator, meaning no rectifier is used. However it does have a voltage regulator in a special deep cover for the junction box. Having said all that, very few 33hp motor buyers opted for the gen kit. Just use a battery charger when you get home.

Hey F_R, do you mean it would have a voltage regulator IF it had a generator or are you saying that it would have a voltage regulator even without a generator?

Voltage regulator is part of the generator kit. Otherwise, it doesn't have one. No charging voltage to regulate.

GREAT. One less electrical component to worry about. I know this motor has points. It's been a long time since I had to set points on a car, how do you do it on an outboard?
