Hey guys, this might sound stupid but im new to this, I recently acquired a used lower unit for my motor (1980 evinrude 50 horse) and I installed it and had no issues everything went great, but before we hit the water this weeknd I wanted to know if I need a gasket sealer around the base of the lower unit where it attaches to the motor or does the pressure of the two pieces coming together create a good enough seal? I assunme I don't need a seal but I want to amek sure. Any help would be great thanks guys.

You're good. Those pieces don't need a good seal.

If you mean between the top of the gearcase and the bottom of the outer exhaust housing no there is no seal. It is just a metal to metal joint.

There are seals associated with the inner exhaust housing.
I suggest you go to the parts catalog HERE find your engine and look at the parts diagrams for the exhaust housing and the gearcase.

I trust you took the opportunity to overhaul the water pump and either pressure tested the new gear case or renewed the oil seals anyway.
