I HAVE READ ALL THE POSTS CONCERNING TWO STROKE OIL, AND THIS QUESTION IS SOMEWHAT RELATED.
I HAVE AN 125 H.P. MOTOR. UNFORTUNATELY TO GET TO OPEN WATER, I HAVE TO TRAVEL IN A CANAL FOR ABOUT 10 MILES.AT
5MPH WAKE ZONE.AS YOU COULD PROBABLY GUESS, I HAVE A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH FOULING PLUGS. I WAS READING SOME INFO ABOUT THE OPERATION OF
OIL INJECTION SYSTEMS.UNFORTUNATELY MY MOTOR IS AN OLD PREMIX UNIT, BUT I WAS WONDERING IF I WAS PLANNING ON DOING A LOT OF CRUISING IN THE CANAL IF I
SHOULD MIX THE OIL/GAS AT A DIFFERENT RATIO CONSIDERING I WOULD PROBABLY BE DOING A LOT OF LOW SPEED OPERATING? WOULD THIS HELP WITH PLUG FOULING?
THANKS
,

Re: JUST WONDERING

There is a simple way to solve this. Get a portable fuel tank and mix it 100:1 and use it ONLY at idle. Then just about the end of the No Wakw zone, switch the tanks (Don't have to stop the motor to do this) and by the time you reach the end of the No Wake zone the 50:1 mix will be running through the engine and ready and able to go for it. Give the fuel about 7-10 minutes from the time you switch fuel lines to make sure that the right mix is running before you get up and go.

Craig

Gee, I don't think I would go with a 100:1 mix if the book calls for 50:1. An '86 is newer than the engines I usually mess with, but it ain't new. Maybe there is a higher heat range plug for that engine, or maybe you just need to count on a little hard-running after the no-wake....

Get an auxillary motor, hang it off the transom like a trolling motor, and run that through the slows.

If the compression, ignition, and the thermostat are good, It will help some to replace the needle and seat in the carb. I dont have complete story on this so will take some research. There are 3 or 4 different needles/ seats for the carbs. The carb that has a steel needle without rubber tip and has rubber seal inside seat always seems to run rich. This needle and seat can be replaced with a needle/seat that has rubber tip on needle, and works much better for fuel control. To remove the seat, which is pressed in, you use a small slide hammer, with sheet metal screw on end, screw the screw into the seat and pop it out.Inportant have new part before you remove old needle seat.

Search 12 Footer some of his replys spoke of better idling by decarb and brand change of oil.

Hey SWAINDE,
I agree with yepblaze, get a kicker (we call them auxilliarys) and use that in the 5kt zone. This way you'll save fuel as well as solve the other problem. The kicker will also help if breakdown occurs. It won't necessarally charge the battery though.
You'll be surprised how fast a kicker can send you through the water. For steering the main outboard leg will suffice although it'll be a little slow to respond.
Hey I just remembered another cure, use a much undersized prop and the rpm will rise, you'll need to change it though once open water is reached
Ross
