Bought a JW10 that was seized up. Previous owner didn't know anything. Supposedly an old lady gave him the motor; this should mean it was seized from improper storage. I managed to pound one cylinder down so both cylinders were even and ports were closed. For several days I poured Seafoam in the cylinders. It very slowly leaked out. I think that's a good sign. After 4 or 5 days i was able to break the cylinders free. Now it seems to spin like I'd expect. Last night I poured synthetic 10w30 into the cylinders, just to give it some lubrication before I actually start it up. Is there anything further I should do with the cylinders? What causes it to seize up? Is it strictly the friction between rings and cylinder without any oil to lubricate?

Sitting for 40 years will do it - you can get some corrosion which locks things up. Sometimes people leave them with the plugs out so humidity gets in there and rust happens. As long as she's freed up, and you've oiled the cylinders, not much more you can do. I'd check compression, change the gearcase oil, definitely change the impeller, and make sure the gas tank is clean. Then give her a try.

And check your spark as it should jump a 1/4 " open air gap.

I would pull the motor apart. If it was stuck hard enough that you had to "pound" on anything, then it would benefit from a teardown and thorough inspection & cleaning. Not hard to do - those twins are the simplest little buggers around. No bearings to lose, no hoses to re-route - VERY simple. And, IMO, worth the effort to make it right...
