If the coast guard/police pulls you over for a "safety check" and looks at your flame arrestor...he'll see that its an air filter not a FLAME arrestor and could give you a ticket. The point of the flame arrestor is to prevent the backfire from igniting the boat

Not only safety, but doesn't a flame arrestor let through more air than a filter would anyhow (ie, more performance would come from a flame arrestor)?

Adding an air filter where there is none could't possibly help performance one bit. If anything, it'd be less. Probably not by any significant amount, but still........
Not sure about you guys, but my lake is pretty dust free.

If you're in a situatoin where you worry aobut dust getting into the engine, then I could see it. K&N does have set-ups that are marine approved. While I doubt this is going to help anything on a 2 bl carb 4.3, I will tell you that in my experience the stock flame arresotrs are much more restrictive than one would think...

The K&N flame arrestors have the CG # stamped on the edge the cover. I have one because I did convert to 4brl. I have the plastic merc shroud over it though, which hides the "air filter" look, to some extent. I expect to get questioned on it, if they want to see the engine. I know right where it is stamped along with on the carb.
