K&N airfilter/flame arrestor

I'm considering getting a k&n filter/flame arrestor for my inboard v-8. I've heard the argument that a flame arrestor alone doesn't filter the air sufficiently, ultimately having adverse effects on the engine itself. Now are these kandn's a USCG approved item? Are they worth it?

One thing you must take into consideration, is safety.<br /><br />Any device used by the manufacturer regarding air/fuel/ignition/electrics is specifically for marine use. Your engine is sitting in a closed compartment so all must be designed for this ie. have the needed insulation, be free from sparks (alternator) etc.<br /><br />One good way to help your engine perform, is to make a hose, connecting the intake to a source of fresh (cold) outside air. The engine compartment gets fairly hot and cold intake simply helps the thing work by ensuring better airflow and fuel efficiency.<br /><br />Do not, though, expect huge gains. Neither from this nor from K&N.

There is no need to install air filters on boat motors, inboard or outboard. There is very little dust on the water and even a K&N will create more restriction than your standard set-up.<br /><br />The flame arrester is there for safety and you should keep it clean but do not remove it.<br /><br />As UU said try and get more cold air into the engine compartment, but be careful you don't get water in too.<br />Peter

I use K&N filters on my vehicles and like them very much....BUT....look at the recharging kit that you need to buy for cleaning them. Then take the K&N spray can with a petroleum-based product that you use for re-coating the filter after you've cleaned it. Spray it over an open flame (your gas kitcheon burner, if your wife will let you!). Surprise! It burns! <br />Want that in your boat?

I have a couple of old Mercedes, and the word on the K&N filters is that they are a little too restrictive for diesel air intakes. I would think that might be a problem for boat engines as well (gas or diesel in a closed engine compartment).
