Keith:
I started to prime a boat today and the compressor would not start...just buzzed.
Checked the starter, it looked O.K.
Took the top off the 5HP Baldor motor and the wire lugs on 2 of the capacitors were hanging in mid air ..corroded off. I have found a guy that has 2 new ones, but has no idea which terminal goes where. There is no positive or negative terminal on the capacitor, how do you figure where to put the wires. I understand it they are not in the right place I can blow the cap. or the motor will not run, any help would be appreciated.

Most likely motor start/run caps. I'll see if I can find a drawing for you.

Ok......
Look here: http://www.lmphotonics.com/single_phase_m.htm

Typically these caps are not marked for polarity since they are being used in an A/C circuit.

These diagrams are basic, you might have to contact the manufacturer for specifics if you can't trace the circuit you actually have there. There should be something on the can to designate what value the cap is.

What KG said.

Start/Run caps for AC motors are not polarized and can be connected either way.

Thanks Keith and JB
The spades had totally corroded off, and from your info as long as I have the two large black caps in series I will be OK. The silver cap(oil filled I think) still had one wire attached, and the other 2 motor wires run to the black caps.

This compressor has 2-350 chevy pistons and rods mounted on a 100 gallon tank and puts out 24.5 cfm, and I never run out of air.
Thanks again. :)
