Katrina Rock Meet Fiberglass Hull

I was fishing just off of the Timebalier Islands out of Fourchon Louisiana this weekened when I was so lucky to run up on some rocks. These rock were formally jetty barriers but Katrina was nice enough to spread them throughout the bay. Anyway, I lost about fiften inches of gel coat. I just re-decked my boat and i added a gel coat finish instead of putting carpet down again. My point is that I have left over resien, matt and gel-coat. Can I just sand the area down, apply some resien and matt and then apply gel- coat? And Btw, we caught an 8 man limit of Speckled trout two days in a row, a ton of White trout, and a few reds! That makes the rock incident a little easier to swallow!!

I'd do a little grinding to see if there is any delamination going on, tap the hull with a rubber mallet...

Othewise, it just looks like you ripped off the gel coat. Sand it and fix it.

so I dont need to add any fiberglass if its just the gel coat? All i have to do is sand the area a little and add new gelcoat over the exposed fiberglass? Thanks for the help, i am still new to fiberglass repair!!

Nick, I used to fish out of Grand Isle. You're in the best Speck waters in the world, I believe.

You shouldn't need the mat. Sand it out, bevel the edges probaby with just sandpaper, clean it with acetone, use filler your choice, then gelcoat. You may have to match the gelcoat color, of course.

I like to stay at the Sand Dollar, fish Barataria, Independence Island, and up the channel to Bossa Bossa. Or anchor on the other side at the bridge and fish all night. God's country!
