I thought I'd post this before trying it..I go to Ormond beach (florida) and spend the night a lot, and have been considering getting a nice surf fishing rig but then I thought, why not bring and use my kayak out past the surf (10" sit-on) and fish directly where I'm trying to cast? I asked the lifeguards if anyone kayaks out that far, and they said all the time. It has been like glass (past the breakers) the last few times I was there-i do realize there are currents, but is this something reasonable or crazy--just wondering why there are so many surf casters, yet no one ever out there fishing beyond the surf in kayaks?

Please let me know if you have done this or seen it done....or why not if you are experienced in the area..thanks!

It's not a crazy idea. We use a kayak to drop the baits out past the bar when fishing baits for Sharks and Cobia. Paddle back into the beach and wait. When fishing smaller baits, it's easier to just cast. Then again, you'll need a decent rod and decent casting skills to throw a bait that far out.

I have a Tarpon 140 sit on top and go off shore all the time with it. I live in the south west coast and we dont have the breakers, but i have gone about 4 1/2 miles out in mine. wouldnt do it again though it was stable enough but i was sore for a week after paddling that far! i've done 2 miles several times though, i have a humming bird fish finder so i can locate and fish right on the 2 mile reef. just make sure you have the required coast guard equipment (life jacket, sound device, flare) dont do any thing you dont feel comfortable with and make sure you have an anchor with plenty of line. if you pull a muscle and cant make it back in or the current gets too strong, the only thing keeping you from ending up in Africa is that anchor! you will still be in cell phone range with in a few miles so you can call for help if needed, keep it in a ziplock bag. good luck and have fun!

just a quick tip........I always take a small sea anchor to slow my drift when necessary......and a golfers umbrella to use as a sail if the wind is favourable to the direction I`m going.

It’s only crazy if you don’t know what you are doing.

Here is a local guy that fishes the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean from a kayak. I've see him 10-15 miles from home more than a few times.

yeah I guess. I'd hate to be out there with 15 miles to paddle if conditions started changing for the worse.

Yeah, that's crazy too. Not sure how far out they have to go to do that, but I fish for sharks (from shore) and I'd be more worried about the distance these other guys are from shore, over salmon sharks in Alaska. Maybe I'm just a big sissy, lol. Hats off to those willing to kayak out WAY further than I would ever feel safe. :D

going out 4 1/2 miles isn't as much as it sounds, and it's not a big deal the way i do it. i only do it in the summer when the average wave height in the 0-10 mile range is 1' or less. I pay close attention to weather reports and tide charts. I plan it where i catch the morning out going tide and sorta hitch a easy ride out ( there is no breeze untill around noon) I also have a alarm set to the start of the incomming tide and hitch a ride on it back in with the onshore breeze assisting with pushing be back in. Wish i could say i was a bad as@ fighting hurricane winds and perfect storm waves but that is surely not the case! i figured work smarter not harder lol
