Nead a little advice on a transom replacement on a
1988 kayot k200. I'm looking to buy this boat as a
project boat. Owner states transom has leak by I/O
Was told that transom needs replacing (by who ?).
Boat is in average condition for age. Motor and outdrive are supposed to be OK. I have average repair abilities and good access to repair equipment. Looking over the forums and other sources it seems to go from fairly simple to forget it.
Any specific advice on this model is appreciated.
Also relative value of such a boat would be helpful.
Trying to graduate (don't laugh too hard) from a
monkey wards 1955 sea king w/35 hp gale which I nursed for the last 5 years to something a little more "pleasing". A family thing.
Anyone with a similar boat in the WI area is welcome to offer to sell it to me. The above is a little out of traveling range and is not cheap
enough to pay a shipper.

Re: kayot transom

I would say move on to another boat unless the deal is absolutely kickin'. If you figure materials, plus your "sweat equity", thats a good amount. On top of that, if the asking price is fairly high even considering the bad transom, then you should walk. If you are getting the boat for half or less than what the same boat would get in good condition, then go for it. Replacing a transom isn't difficult, but if you spend a lot for the boat AND you get to replace the transom, it isn't worth it. There are too many other boats out there for sale.

Re: kayot transom

Thanks for the advice. They want 2k for boat w/out trailer. If it was "down the block" I might go for it. NADA values don't seem to apply very well w/ so much variaton in care of these older boats. I do feel the transom work wouldn't be too bad (after removing I/O. I guess I just need more patience.
One dealer was selling a 1987 viking 190 but according to my limited research viking was not made
under that name since 1982. Nice boat though whatever the year.
