Keel patch/guard

I bought a 1977 trihull a few weeks ago, and i bought it knowing it was going to need some work, but my question regards the keel, the center keel looks like it needs to be reglassed, i think the word is i know what to call it but can't think of the phrase. the keel has gotten somewhat beaten up it looks like just normal wear and tear from being beached and not treated too gingerly, i might try to post a picture of it later,
my question is though, can i, or should i slap one of those keelguards you can get out of cableas on it or try to refiberglass that part. My father says that he has done it before but not in a long time,
I won't be doing anything about it for a while though seeing as it's not a pressing issue but any advice would be welcome

Re: Keel patch/guard

I bought a boat a couple years ago and was surprised when i looked down in the ski locker, I could see dayl light. Upon inspection I found the keel was down to bare fiberglass from beaching. Much like I am guessing yours is.

What I did is to cover the bare fiber with a coat of marinetex. Sanded it smooth and then put a keel shield on top of that. Worked and looked beatiful.

Re: Keel patch/guard

i don't think its that bad, I hope!!
yea thats a good idea, but for now since at the moment i have the whole outdrive apart, its not to high on my priority list,
i just went out and looked at it again, and it has been patched in one spot with that rubbery sealer,
i have heard on those keelguards that your not suppose to use them if you have centerline rollers?
thanks for the advice by the way

Used to fish a lot of bass tournaments and the guard is a must. Easy to put on also. Bill
