I'm wondering if the stern end of my keelson can be repaired. Where the rudder assembly passes through the keelson, it appears to be held in place with four lag bolts. The keelson is experiencing rot and I am starting to see a slight movement in those bolts. The rot continues from the stern of the keelson forward about 13 inches. Can I remove the rudder and assembly, cut out that section of keelson, get a piece of oak the same size as I have cut out, and splice that in place to the rest of the keelson with some sort of bracing? Or, in other words, what the hell should I do?

What is the boat? That makes all the difference in how to approach the problem.

Short answer is yes it can be repaired.

If this is normal plank on frame construction you may be best off by first dropping the garboards.
I would cut the bad section out at about a 10:1 (or more) scarf and glue & screw (bronze) in a new section.
Is the current keelson oak mahogany? Those would be the two most common choices.

Ok,....... I see you are sort of posting all over the place ( figuratively and literally). Here you are asking about the keelson, in another thread you ask how much resin to use and in another thread you say that you need to replace the transom in your boat and say it is a wooden boat. How about keeping your boat in one thread for a while and providing enough information for someone to give some meaningful advise.
