Keep fishing or cut bait and run

Ok, gonna try to make a somewhat long story short and hopefully interesting. We went to Tablerock Lake this weekend for the Cobalt Regatta that a local dealer puts on taking our pretty much restored '78 Cobalt 19BR. I had built a teak swim deck for her and just had it installed in time for the weekend, looked great.

Get down there around 1700, get the boat in the slip, and decide to go get something to eat. We get on the boat around 1930 for a quick half hour cruise. Tablerock is a gorgeous lake, we cruise about five miles out and decide to head back since its starting to get dark and I dont know the lake that well. We make it about a mile away from the marina when the boat starts acting up. It's chugging and losing power fast. That's when I stop looking at the scenery and look at the guages, temp guage is pegged out. I throw it in neutral and get my hand on the key when it just craps out.

I immediatley open the dog house and that engine was hot! Crap! After I get an anchor thrown I start thinking of what happened. Impeller was new, could have been anything. I couldn't start getting at it till it cooled down and it wasnt cooling down fast at all. We hadnt seen another boat for at least 20 minutes, so the chance of flagging someone down was unlikely. So, I called information and got the number for SeaTow. Called them up, and they got all the information and said they'd be there in 45 minutes, they were in Kimberling City, we were in Shell Knob, 30 minutes by water. Got towed back, and tied up the boat. All the while I was talking to my mechanic back home, who is a great guy for answering a call at 2100 on a Friday night! I was telling him exactly what was going on, and he talked me through a few things to no avail. He said, let it cool off over night and at least see if you can start it in the morning.

Next morning, get down to the boat and try starting it. It would crank and crank, but no go. Best it would do was turn over a bit and back fire through the carb, not good. I called my mechanic back and told him what was going on. He ran me through some things that might work, but didn't. So, I asked him what his advice was. He asked me if I wanted to keep fishing or cut bait on a great boat that needed some pretty major work that could run some big bucks. I decided to cut bait and run.

After a lengthy discussion with the better half, we decided that our timeline on getting a new boat was going to be pushed up considerably. So long story short, we just picked up a brand new 2010 Cobalt 230. Man, the worst weekend Ive had boating turned into the best one!

I really did hate to give up on a boat that I've put so much time and work into, but geez, I had to just draw the line somewhere and say enough was enough. Hopefully, with the new boat, it'll be a very long time before I have to make that decision again.

OK, congrats on the new boat even though it's a bummer about the demise of the old one.

Now with that out of the way, can we get our expressions straight? There is no such thing as "cut bait and run", you're combining two totally separate expressions.

- Fish or cut bait. Means to make up your mind and do one thing or the other.

- Cut and run. Means to minimize your losses or avoid the potential for a fruther loss by running away.

So in your case, what you did is cut and run. Let's leave the poor bait out of it, shall we?

Thank you for your support of the correct use of expressions. We don't want to find ourselves out on a limb without a paddle, do we?

Ha Ha! Yeah, you got me! But what if you're fishing from shore, and a bear comes up....I'm pretty sure I'd run after cutting bait! That's a stretch, but at least had to try!

Sorry about the loss of your old boat, but congrats on the new boat!! You now have piece of mind with a warranty. BTW, I have been casually looking at that exact 2010 model you picked up. I trust that you got a good deal on it!

Good luck!

Purty! Enjoy it, as I'm sure you will!

Just curious... what did you say to the Admiral to get her to agree to a brand new boat? That's quite a step up from a '78, and couldn't have been about the same cost.... :p

Actually, it wasn't hard convincing her at all. In fact, she said "I don't really want to spend that kind of money, but I don't want anything but a Cobalt". So, there ya go!!

Re: Keep fishing or cut bait and run

I have an '82 Cobalt. I have thought about what would happen if the motor took a crap. I realized that I could put a brand new motor and outdrive in to it, and still save what loss there would be in the depreciation and interest expenses of a new boat. Plus, there is nothing like having a classic with nice teak to have trimming it out! Cobalt boats will last almost forever, even though their power plants won't. It's just a matter of choice to most. For me, it's like staying married. I can still look.... But, she's good to me, so she's a keeper!:D

I have a 1974 Cobalt, so I know what you are talking about! I rarely use it anymore though so am looking to sell it to a friend and kind of "keep it in the family"

Re: Keep fishing or cut bait and run

wbc1957, that was exactly the difficult decision we were faced with. She is still a gorgeous boat and I've had many friends say that its the nicest riding boat they've been on. The thing that weighed on us the most was sure, we can get it fixed, but then what next. When I bought the boat, I knew little to nothing about boats, it just looked like it was really in good shape. However, its biggest drawback was that it was an OMC 800. After doing a little bit of research here, I realized that I could be on sitting on a time bomb. I didn't know they were obsolete and that there would be some considerable amount of time and money to fix it if it ever broke down.

That's why we decided on buying a new Cobalt for the long run. I figure if I maintain it mechanically and cosmetically like mine was, it'll last as long as I want it to. So yeah, part of me feels like I gave up on her, but in my situation, I just didn't want to be constantly working on a boat and putting money into something that may let us down again. Now, I have a brand new one with a great warranty, and an outdrive I can find parts for! My only regret buying the '78 was not doing enough research to realize my outdrive was a dinosaur.

Thanks for the advice...and I usually do keep a good eye on the guages. I looked at the temp guage literally a minute before it overheated. The impeller in it had maybe 10 hours on it, so don't think that was it. My mechanic at home things I picked up a bag or something...who knows.

Re: Keep fishing or cut bait and run

I looked at an older Cobalt It had an OMC Cobra 5.0 in it. I was looking for something with a Mercruiser motor and drive. I could never get a hold of the owner to taker her out on Lake Jackson for a test run. The guy selling it for him was too busy to talk to me about the boat really. He was like Here it is it is in great shape I can't believe he only wants $3,000 for it. It was newly painted.

It looked just like the one in Cuyose's pics. Loved the look wasn't to fond of the brown interior but the boat looked solid. Too bad it didn't have Mercruiser Power or drive. Though I do know that SEI sells a conversion kit and their replacement drives are of good quality and affordable. I just wanted something I was familiar with and know that I could work on and had plenty of available parts. If something happened.

She was a nice looking boat.
