Keep or sell spare gearcase?

Engines: 1975 115hp and 1977 85 hp (Johnson)

Since I have my 85 nearly ready to run, I'm thinking about selling the complete gearcase (minus prop) of the 1975 115hp parts motor I bought for the ignition parts. The 115 has a blown block so I assume there were no issues with the lower unit that caused it to be scrapped.

Two questions regarding this:

1. In the parts diagrams the complete lower unit is only compatible with other 85's and 115's from 1975 and 1976. However, all but just a very few internal parts are used in many models and years. The gearcase bearing assembly unit is used by most motors from 85hp to 135hp years 1974-1977. Am I safe to think this would cleanly bolt on to and work with of these motors? Also, what would be a reasonable price to ask for it on Craigslist?

2. I see so many engines for sale that have bad lower units. Would it be wise to sell a working gearcase or should I keep it as a spare?

If I'm not being clear, here are the part numbers I'm talking about:

1 0386289 GEARCASE & BRG.ASSY. $300
109 0387579 GEARCASE ASSY.,Complete $1878

Recouping some of my money would be great since I have many other areas of my boat that need "investment."

Thanks

They will fit 73 - 77 motors, I would get my motor running and in the water before I sold off the lower unit, just in case. They can be hard to find in a hurry.

I agree with NWCOVE. The moment you sell it off............."DOH! Why did I sell that unit?!?!?!" Seriously, if you look at it money wise, I'd keep it. If something goes wrong, unbolt one, bolt up another, back in the water later on that day or the next. The choice really is your to make. Just be happy with the choice you make.

I seem to come across the first sentance of this reply all too much in my own life! LOL!

nwcove is absolutely correct, every motor I ever had a spare gear case for never went bad. it is cheap insurance. keep it.

Also, you have no idea whether or not the CG is any good. You're assuming it's OK because the powerhead was bad. Not necessarily so.
