keep the vro or premix

1985 johnson 115 hp i just bought this boat used never had a vro always premix gas. read they may be a bad thing. is this true.im better off to premix and get rid of the vro..i just got this engine running half way decent dont want to ruin it now.im taking all precautions to not have any thing fail on the water.???

That would fall under the heading "Old Wives Tales". ;)

It hasn't failed in 22 years. Why worry now?

The vast majority of such rumors has far more to do with owners neglecting to remove the drain plug, allowing rain to fill the boat enough to get into the oil tank. Or forgetting to put the plug in and nearly sinking the boat with the same result. It has far more to do with embarrasment than fact.
