i want to put some alumimiun check plate on the back of my boat but am worried about going funny with the salt and general exposure ie white and blotchy. is there any thing to do to aviod this.i was told marine grade but we have a company near us who use this to build boats and after awhile this still happens.

Re: keeping alumimium shiny

Hi sinkunit0

Here is what I was told when I was thinking of polishing mine. You wont need to do that part :) but do use the marine grade aluminum.
steps:
1: Polish (you can skip that part)
2: acid etch (it will turn yellowish)
3: Rinse with water until clean again
4: Blow dry (air hose)
5: Spray with 4-6 coats of marine clear coat.
6: Wax! There is a waiting period for the clear coat to fully cure before waxing.

Be it paint/clear coat on a car or boat your still using the wax to protect it. There are many opinions on how to do this.

You didn't say why you wanted to put the diamond plate on the transom? For looks OK.. to support a weak transom on a fiberglass or wood boat I would not recommend it. Do the repair work.
Just my thoughts

Link
