Keeping hull strait while installing stringers

I have read a few posts with talk about hull distortion when installing stringers. I am almost ready to put mine in, my hull is on the trailer supported by the bunks on the trailer. Will this be ok? Is there something I should look for?

I am also wondering how to hold the stringers in initially, before the have a layer of cloth. Can I just put down some thickened resin & push the stringers into it?
Thanks for all the help,
Lance

doing it on a bunk trailer should work for you..

you can take a string line from the tip of the bow to each corner of the stern and the length should be equal this means your square. Its a good check do it often.

you want to bed your stringer so that no part of the stringer rests on the hull.
you want the stringer off the hull like an 1/8 of an inch. most bed in peanut butter, or PL (Polyurethane Premium Construction Adhesive)

Pay special attention to the shape of the hull. Have you read the restoration of the the Shanky Beast http://recaffeinated.net/skankybeast/page1.html Jason had a hook forming in the hull and had to repair the hook shape as he installed stringers.

Re: Keeping hull strait while installing stringers

So do I put down some construction adheasive the length of the stringer & then push the stringers into it, or put dabs every foot or so to leave a air gap?

I read the shanky beast & that is the first project I had seen mention of the hull distorting, & I have seen others. How can you tell how the bottom looks when it is sitting on the trailer? I can check from bow to stearn like suggested by JM, Is that enough.

Thank guys.

you do not want any air gap.. you can lay a strip of adhesive then place the stringer in it. you can use a thin piece of foam or plastice to keep the stringer off of the hull. you are trying to avoid hardspots where the stringer touches the hull

When I took my stringers out there were little high spots of resin, nothing else onder them, They were actally pretty good on the very bottom. Does that sound right.

A simple method is remove and replace stringers one at a time.
They shouldn't touch the hull, regardless how the factory did them.

The glass running down the stringer onto the hull bottom is what carries the load without creating hard spots which will cause cracks in the glass.

Thanks for the input, I will shim them up around 1/8 to 1/4" if that sound right.

I already have all the stringers out, however there are still some 1/2" x 1" plywood strips still in the hull, They are in really deep resin & are in good shape. They hull will still flex if I lift on a back corner, so I will start with the center one & hope to keep the hull true.
