I have a friend that has a 48 hp outboard Johnson. The boat would not run properly so he took it to have it serviced. The dealership told him they found kerosene in the tank and that they would need to replace the carb. I find it hard to believe that kerosene would destroy a carb and that it would need totally replaced. Cleaned out and rebuilt yes - replaced? no. I feel the dealership is putting it to my buddy. Any thoughts?

kerosene, varnish, old dried out gas. Seen it a million times. Cleaned them a million times too.
Generaly, didn't even need to replace parts including gaskets as long as I treated them gingerly in disassymbly.

I think your friend might want to get a second Opinion

my '70 merc 1150 inline 6 has 3 carbs.
I paid $450 to R/R them last summer.
seem high? not... gotta tear motor all apart
just to get at 'em @ ($40/HR) which is cheap BTW...
rebuild kits are at the most $50ea, so the rest is
labor. you do the math.
good luck,
M.Y.

Listen to Bradster941, he's on the mark. You shouldn't need new carbs

Hi Anhizer
Maybe your freinds outboard is suposed to have kerosene in the carb. Some models are set up to run kero. This could explain the need to swap the entire carb. This assumes that you want to run gasoline.
