Waste of money and time, it is stronger, but traditional glass is plenty strong for normal boating.

If you are building a race boat or a special purpose boat of some type my thoughts are less valid.

They may not be all that valis anyway :)

Kevlar Mat??? for bottom of the boat?

Ayuh,....

I suppose it would be a Great Idea,....
But,..
Only if you plan on running Aground on a regular basis.....

Otherwise, there are other composites that do the job, probably Cheaper...

Impacts,+ Abrasions aren't all that common on most charter boats that I know of....

in a standard boat.....you will never ever use the stregnth that a fabric like that will give you........

especially at 31 bux a yard....and epoxy at 50 dollars a gallon.

the composite fabrics are really good on a specialty racing hull

but for a charter boat.....a 50 dollar keel gaurd will do just as well

It's very nice for abrasion resistance and puncture resistance, but as others have said, it's expensive and overkill for that type of boat.

You can't even use normal cutting tools on it, you need ceramic coated shears to cut it.

Also note that it's only really good for puncture and abrasion resistance. If you're actually looking for structural strength, you want carbon fiber instead... it's much, much stronger than kevlar, S-glass, or E-glass.

But any of these are way, way overkill. Also worth noting is that they're all less strong than a steel hull (yes, they're stronger than steel by weight and by comparison, but a 1/4 or 3/8 sheet steel hull is still stronger). If you really want that strong a hull, don't build in fiberglass :)

kevlar is soft and playable, I think all Aramid fabrics are... it may be good on impact, but a sharp rock will slice right through it.

Carbon fiber would be a cheaper, lighter, and stronger way to go.

Ayuh,....

And 1 of those 3 is sitting right here in Watertown, Ny....

I did a thread about dropping in the 3, 7.4s into it last winter...

Unfortunately,..
My buddy, Bob, didn't get it finished,+ now he's hoping for a June launch...
