key switch alarm always on

I have a 1994 mariner 200 hp and the key switch when in the on position has a very quiet high pitched horn on continuosly.
I thought it was the engine alarm but discovered it was coming from the key switch. Is this just indicative of a key switch failure? Or does this "quiet" alarm signifiy some problem? Like I said the engine alarm for overheat or oil is not on. When the key switch is fist turned to the on position there is the normal LOUD beep-beep.
Thanks,
Dave

I assume you have remote key switch with built in alarm and when you turn it on you must hear 2 beeps. These beeps tell you that the alarm system is working. A quiet steady signal could be a short or failure in key switch horn. The steady on horn is either temp or very low oil signal. The temp signal would require motor to be running for a while so if it does it right away either it's the oil warning or you have a shorted temp sensor. Sensors do fail but verify it.

For the oil to have a steady signal the engine reservoir would be way down. Check for oil then check connections. I sold my boat with an XR6 on it to a guy and he disconnected the horn because it was irritating. Now he drives his dad's tri-hull 70 hp, so make sure it's not a valid signal.

Key-on continuous beep is usually a failed warning module, could be a failed warning horn.
