I have a 83 johnson 35 hp console control and every once in a while it starts making this loud electrical buzzing, screaching noise with vibration that seems to be coming from the key switch/choke button area.If i shut the thing off and let it set for awhile it is ok again.has anyone ever run across this problem ? is there a simple fix or should i replace the switch?
Thanks Again for a Great web sight.

This may be a stupid question but are you sure it is not your overheat buzzer. May be why when you shut it off it goes away. Horn is usally located under the dash next to the ignition switch. Just a guess. If it is your overheat alarm check to see if you are pumping water thru the motor.

the motor is pumping water and dosn't seem the be hot and i don't think it even has a heat alarm. The key switch is by the shifter and you push the key in to operate the choke. next to the shifter (on the side of the housing) it has some kind of round black switch with a metal prong sticking out of it (broke off).I think this is some sort of kill switch (that a cable hooks to and then hooks to you incase you fall out) but not sure. If it stops raining i'll take it apart and see if i can locate the problem better.

Hi,
is the noise definatley from that area? just thinking it could be a faulty choke solenoid in the engine which will buzz when choking.

Re: key switch making buzzing noise

well, i pulled the control box apart and found what looks like a buzzer.i followed th wires and sure enough ,right to the head. 100 points for revertmastec. I also got looking around and this motor has a tell tail or whetever you call it, and when it is running no water comes through it.it does spray water out the hole in the back of the motor, must be not enough. Next problem, when i got this boat i tried to change the water pump as routeen maintaince but could not get the lower unit to drop ,not a bit.i checked and followed everyones advice, all bolts and nuts are off.it is not the shift linkage. The front stud is corroded in the mid sec.i tried spraying and tapping and tapping and it wont go. how can i change my water pump impeller?

Glad to hear you seemed to found your problem, I am sure someone will give you asst. in getting your lower unit off. Depending on how long the motor ran hot if it did at all you may want to check your compression to look for damage. Hope all goes well and keep us updated.

ok, heres the scoop.I bought a manual,a new impeller kit,and a compression tester. The compression is 120 psi in both cyls.and the LU stud was froze up.not letting the LU drop. I ended up heating.and tapping and prying untill i got the LU to drop about 1/4 inch.in about an hour.I had enough and sawed the **** stud off. the LU dropped right out.I drove half the stud up through the top and drilled out the piece in the LU.Took the water pump housing apart and the impeller was froze to the shaft.after about a half hour fighting with that with no sucess i got out the 4 1/2" grinder and ground the impeller off at the key, as to not damage the shaft.I am now waiting for my new stud to come in so I can try her out. Thanks to all for the help.
